Ok,
I have a few other threads about my 86 d150 truck I am fixing up.
I have a few questions id like to ask here if anyone can help great.
It has to do with my exhaust system (I believe the system has to do with the smog pump that pushes air into the exhaust).... anyway...

First let me explain my situation and questions...

FIG1 and FIG2 show exhaust comming out of the metal tube on the left of the engine bay, which is connected to the exhaust manifold as shown in one of the pics as "B".

I went under the truck, followed lines, got dirty, took pics and found oout what connects to what.

Currently I have this exhaust comming from that pipe de-tached from the smog-pump devirter because its all melted n messed up so it blows exhaust at my battery.. its just dangling down near my wheel blowing out exhaust from the hose.

What my question is... is it normal for exhaust to come out of fig B into the hose shown in BLUE in FIG2???? If so is its only purpose smog related?
How do I go about STOPPING exhaust from comming out of the tube? (its all disconnected anyway not like it will help anything ) Id like it to just go out the muffler.

The thing is, there is some sort of vacuum line or something connected to the exhaust manifold on the other side of where the tube B comes out. It is shown in the pics as "C". It has a hose on it that connects at point A in the pic. What the heck is the "C" thing????

I am also wondering what point A is..... why its connected to the exhaust manifold... why point A also has 3 other hose points which are all capped... is it all smog related too?

I am thinking that vacuum line going down to the manifold somehow controls where the exhaust is going .... hince my problem......

What should I do? Really I just need someone to explain this whole mess to me ... Id like to know how to route the exhaust thru the muffler and not that tube if wanted, but would also like the option to *set it up* how its supose to be once everything is repaired.

Please help, sorry if I sound confused, I am haha. Wish I knew what everything in the pics did......... then wouldnt have to post here.

Thanks
Dan :D

You need to block off the two vacuum fittings that aren't being used in the picture labeled A . As for all of the rest of your pictures everthing you have pointed out is emission related stuff. If you live in a area that doesn't require emissions test I would either take the metal line coming out of B and plug it if the other side has a metal hose coming out of it remove the hose and plug it as well, or I would install a set of headers. Anyway you go about it I would remove all of the emissions stuff that way you don't have exaust blowing inside of ou engine compartment.

are you sure if I plug the metal tube comming out of the manifold up in the engine bay where the hose is connected, the exhaust will have a place to go?(hopefully out to the muffler) ... I dont want it to backup somewhere else from me plugging it..... what function does the C mechanism do? thx

Also, instead of plugging all of A ... cant I just stick 1 plug on C? (after taking off the hose) which would do the same thing... or does the hose need to go up for a reason?

Dude you can rip all that emissions stuff off and not have a problem :) That tube is where the air pump pumped air into the exhaust, when it worked.

The thing w/ the vacuum canister is a heat riser, I think it's called. supposed to hold exhaust in the engine more until it reaches a certain temp or something. Also useless IMO lol.

Speed is right, rip that crap out.

The item listed as "C" is a vacumn actuator that closes when cold to cause exhaust to cross-over thru the intake manifold and warm it to help prevent carb icing in cold (freezing) climates.
Use of a early model left side manifold would eliminate these connections and need for plugs.

anyone know a trick to make that vacuum controlled thing always on the OPEN position? so the exhaust always goes the exhaust route and not thru the tube? I tried putting a vacuum line on it but that didnt work. I can stick my finger behind the mechanism and push it- seems to open fine- just doesnt stay open. When I let go of my finger it just springs back into closed position.

doh!

I take it you have a cat converter on it. See if you can get that off or get a friend with a lift in a garage to get it to where you can work with it.

1. I you have access to an electric welder you could weld it in the open position.
2. Better yet remove the bolts that hold it on and remove the actuator, shaft and valve plugging the shaft holes with bolts or 1/8" pipe caps. (Requires tapping threads.)
3. Replace it with a left side manifold
