hey all, i have been having a stall issue with my truck for quiet some time, its been long enough. can someone tell me how to start the diagnostic? does the diagnostic enable with the key to give codes? if so how do i enable it? i ask that because i heard thru the grapevine that it mite work that way. any help would be apreciated.

Turn the key ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON, then watch for the flashes of the check engine light. Count the flashes, each code is 2 diggits, it'll flash the 1st digit, short pause, 2nd digit, longer pause, repeat for any other codes. For example, Codes 12 and 55 work flash as:

Probably your truck doesn't have the Self-Diagnostic capability then, I don't think they started that until '87 but could be wrong.
Anyway, what exactly is it doing?

Self diag wasn't until 90 or 91 if I remember right. In order to retrieve codes on an 86 you would need to get a code retriever but I don't think you'll get much from an 86 except for EGR or carb. sensor codes.
