My gen1 (270K miles) has a nasty howl/buzz from the tires that gets louder as speeds increase. It also gets much louder when turning the steering wheel to the right. (quiets when turning the wheel to the left.)
Tires are not the culprit here. (swapped them out.) Sounds like a mob of hornets !
Tires are not rubbing on anything either. Any ideas ?

Replace the front two wheel bearings and your problem will be solved!!!!!! It cost me about 30 bucks to have one installed. I did my other one a week later by myself and ended up going to a shop and paying them 10 bucks to press it all back together. Better off to let a shop do them. They are tough to do at home without the right tools.

Thanks for your help. Are the wheel bearings located near the brake disks, or do you need to remove the drive shafts to replace them ?
Thanks again. I do plan on replacing them myself, and just need a couple of pointers to get me going.

you need to remove the whole steering nuckle or hub assemble to get access to the wheel bearings. And yes, goto the shop to get it done, its allot less headaches. Ive done one in my laneway with this POS wheelbearing tool I bought. Struggled for an hour and then off to the shop I went...lol. Sounds like everyone has fun doing wheel bearings.

I didn't have no special tools when I did mine. I used a huge socket and a hammer to beat the bearing and everything apart. Like Cloner said, the money you pay for the shop to do them is well worth it IMHO. Especialy if your going into this blind as it seems you are. One other option that may be more easy is to get the entire hub/bearing assembly. It may cost more than just a few bearings but it would be much more easy to install. Getting your old bearings out of the hub is rough and it's also rough getting the new ones in.I took them to the shop for them to press them in, the hammer and socket I used to take the old ones out worked for that but I was not going to take a chance of beating the new bearings to death putting them in with the socket and hammer. If you do that you may bust or ruin the new bearings.
BTW: Get yourself a manual from autozone, it will come in handy!! I buy one soon as I get any new car. Good Luck
