Just picked up my first truck, a D150 v8 shortbed.
The side of the truck says 150 Royal SE near the logo.
Has 112k miles.
Seems to have a few more things wrong with it then it said in the add. Kind of feel like i got scammed as he told me nothing is wrong with it and bout 10 other lies just to sell it..... luckily I know where he lives if it turns out to be a pos (read on give your opinion I need some).

From what I noticed, it has a carb problem (idles rough, when its hott not as bad) stutters a bit at lower speeds giving it gas. running very rich too. Theres also 1 dent in front fender, needs paint, windshield is cracked, passanger door lock jams all the time. Also when I shift gears to drive or R the truck jerks like a bomb just went off and makes a loud bang! Whats that indicate? It seems to start up ok after 1 or 2 turns.

I have a general idea from a friend who thinks hes a mechanic , and luckily have a REAL mechanic friend who is coming to look at the truck today to tell me the good and bad. I did notice it has a small exhaust leak below the truck.

I think the rims/tires look good, engine looks fairly clean with some new stuff. Not sure what all it has.

I drove it home 30 miles and it made it ok, speedmeter is off tho (15 MPH over). Also the AC seems to not turn off even if I set it to OFF.

Doesnt shake at high speed and brakes are good it seems.

What do you guys think of this truck? I need some solid opinions.
Just want to know if I got scammed or if this is a good deal and the value of it.
Thanks.

my mechanic friend will be adjusting the carb or rebuilding it soon, so that should fix the idling/low speed issues. Not sure on bout the rest.

engines a v8.

Thanks guys
Dan

It looks good. As for the "did I get ripped off" aspect, that depends on how much you paid for it. If you gave 10K, then you got ripped. It is an older truck so there will beproblems. The main thing to remember is if you feel you got a deal, then you did. Good luck with it and have fun!

Paid less then 900, thanks man I feel better!

I'd say that is a good deal. The bang in gear could be the idle is to high.My 77 does this if not set right.

Sounds like it needs motor/trans mounts at least, worst case it needs a rear end. Could have bad u-joints too. What kind of carb? 2bbl, 4bbl, Carter, Holley? Looks like a Holly 4bbl from the pic. Probably either isn't set right or needs a rebuild.

I think for under it's a good deal, even if it needs a rear. Rears are pretty easy and reasonable to come by. I'd check the plugs for proper heat range and type, if he has the Super Duper Platinum Titanium Alloy Racing Plugs or whatever, throw them away and get Champion, NGK or Autolite regular plugs.

Check the timing for proper setting, make the carb base gasket is good, make sure the carb is actually bolted down tight (yes I've seen a running car w/ a carb loose enough to move by hand), make sure the idle mix settings are right. For the bang in the driveline, check the motor mounts, trans mount, crossmember bolts, u-joints, and rear end play.

Thanks man I will mention all this to my mechanic friend I am sure he will know how to check it all.

The guy i bought it from said some mechanic mumbo jumbo (even my semi-mechanic friend didn't understand) about the carb saying it sucked up some crap and it needed some kind of work (is that rebuilt? )

I would guess its a Holly 4bbl but will know for sure in a few hours.

will update on my progress if you all want to know what happens

I am curious to on how much you charge to rebuild a carb?

thanks Dan

PM sent. It is possible it sucked up some dirt. If it's a Holley, it's also very likely to have blown out the power valve, if it ever backfired a few times.

I am going to sound like an an old fart for saying this

But

go though you truck one system at a time
fuel
ignition
electrical

make a list of what needs doing and then set your priorities

I would suggest get it running well and then make it look pretty

The wind up and bang when you engage the transmission, unless you are running too high and idle speed, is probably worn transmission/engine mounts or worn u-joints

Low transmission fluid level can also cause a harsh engagement but that is usually accompanied by delayed engagement

at <$900 I do not think you got ripped off

That's actually a decent bed liner, it goes over the bed rails. Doesn't let much water or trash underneath it.

ive never trusted any bedliners excep for spray ons

Well personally I don't like them much either, but the over-the-rail liners are the best to get if you're gonna get one, well besides a spray-on. Although some spray-on and/or brush-on liners aren't real great either.
