I was wondering if anyone knows how difficult it is to replace the harmonic balancer pulley and if the engine needs to be lifted out to do so. Mine is in rough and noisy shape due to an engine mount breaking on me a while ago.
Thanks

No it's pretty easy to remove. just jack up the car and remove the front passenger side tire. remove the splash sheild and its right there. you need a 3 jaw puller to remove it. remove the bolt partially first and then position the puller so it pushes on the head of the bolt

So it's basically just removing and replacing, there are no parts that are going to fly off at me or any other surprises? Oh yeah my neon is a 1998, DOHC, auto.

Get yourself an Underdrive pulley to replace it with. May as well free up some HP when you fix it. Did you fix the motor mount? Good Luck

do you still have to bake them to get them on? i heard somewhere there was a udp that you didnt have to bake first.

It wouldnt be a bad idea to heat up the old one before you take it off as well as heating up the new one b4 it goes on.

ok, thanks for the help and yes the mount was replaced a while ago (my engine was riding sideways), just procrastinated about the pulley and now my car is LOUD.

ok so heat it up with a torch? what about the non-bake pulleys? i think they were on maxneon or somethin like that?

I pulled my old pulley off last weekend, i am in the midst of a top end rebuild.
it just popped right off without a lot of effort from the 3 jaw puller
I didnt heat it up

Pull it off and push it on that is what I did with my Modern Performance UDP. I hate to heat metal up as I worry about screwing up the temper.

My 99 sohc pulley wouldn't come off at all I wound up breaking a small piece off where the puller clamps down. after that I said forget it and just put it back together anyone else had this issue.

Did you use a Chrysler or similar pulley removal tool? I had no problems with my '98

Yeah when you first take the bolt out it looks like a part of the pulley is actually the end of the crankshaft. but its not
you cannot push on any outside surface of the pulley even if it looks like it may be the end of the crank. you need to insert something into the hole in the center of the pulley. the chrysler pulley remover comes with a pin that you insert in the hole and the puller pushes against that. you could use that or your crankshaft/pulley bolt
