Sweet, I just traded my 98 neon (auto) for a 01 manual :) So far, couldnt be more happy with the car. Ive been searching now for hours trying to learn more about this car. It has 85000 and so far, everything seems to work perfect on the car. I will be replacing the timing belt in a month or so. Im looking for anything known issues that the 2nd Gen might be prone too. So far, very pleased with the performance of it. Im pretty sure whoever had this one before me replaced the motor, it has paint pen markings on the block, intake and valve covers. Motor sounds great, no pings or knocks, very strong, spins em through 1st and 2nd, a bit in 3rd and a cute chirp into 4th. Any advise would be great.

There is no freaking way you're chirping 4th with an SE (base SOHC - 132Bhp... lame).
A) You have the R/T engine and trans, and you're darn good at speed shifting (I mean DARN good).
B) Your engine has something mad crappy done to the engine, mod wise.
C) Your tires really, REALLY suck.
Or any combination of the three.
Congrats on the new car though. Good to hear you freed yourself from the slushbox.

With all my mods and VERY sticky tyres I can just chirp second! Crappy tyres and I spin a bit thru second. NO WAY ur chriping 3rd or even 4th unless ur running over birds when u change gear! lol

i have no idea what motor is in it, i know its sohc, but it does have crappy tires, forget about trying to stop in wet weather. defiantly faster than the last one, but not crazy fast. Faster then the few v6 mustangs and my brothers magnum sport, the v6 one.. Are there any markings on the block that will tell me anything. It may be the clutch in it. I was surprise by the 4th chirp as well. I can only do it 1 out 5 tries or so.

Get some decent rubber. Then come back and tell us you're chirping 2nd like everyone else.

thats a stock engine. airbox and all. If the tires are bald, you put oil all over them...and you were on wet pavement, I could possibly see a 4th gear chirp. lol

I just put my used set of bfgoodrich all seasons on. cant chirp into 4th now, but chirps into 3rd. Going into 2nd is a lil spin, not like before. Its on normal dry pavement. What should the 0-60 times look like on the 01 se?

i can chirp 3rd. but only if im taking a turn that nearly makes my tires squeal anyway.
could squeal 2nd pretty good with my old wal-mart studded winter tires in a straight line on dry pavement
can barely chirp second now with my fusion HRi's 195/60/14

Slow. Even slower with whatever tires you're using that are allowing you to chirp them so easily.
i could chirp 3rd. but only if i was taking a turn that nearly made my tires squeal anyway.
Yep, thats normal. Or if you're in a left handed sweeper taking more weight off the drivers side (the lighter side). Assuming the 3.94:1 trans. Easier to chirp on concrete as well.
BTW... I edited your post, made it past tense. :D

I think your hearing things. There is just no way a stock neon se will chirp in 4th unless those tires are extremely cheap, wornout and it's wet out.
With a new set of tires I cant make third chirp all the time. On the other hand if they are about 8-9 months old they will spin easy and chirp third with enough power to make it torque steer some. Then again Im not talking about chirping third from a dig I am refering to a 55 mph shift from 4th into third gear and chirping my tires as I pass someone!

OK, now that it raining out, its a full on spin, but once the sun comes back, im getting the camera out. Im pretty sure ill get a good spin into 4th in the rain, but im not even gunna try that at 110. I did it into 3rd at 70, and it was enough spin to be pretty scary.
