here the procedure from mitchel:
Removal
1. Remove cotter pin, nut lock and spring washer from stub axle end of axle shaft. Loosen front hub nut and
wheel lug nuts while vehicle is still on floor with brakes applied. Raise and support vehicle. Remove
wheel lug nuts, and wheel and tire assembly. Remove hub nut and washer from stub axle shaft.
2. Remove disc brake caliper assembly mounting bolts from steering knuckle. Remove disc brake caliper
assembly by rotating top of caliper assembly away from steering knuckle, and then removing bottom of
caliper assembly from under machined abutment on steering knuckle. Support disc brake caliper
assembly by using a wire hook and suspending it from strut assembly. DO NOT allow caliper assembly
to hang by flex hose. Remove brake rotor from hub and bearing assembly.
3. Remove outer tie rod end by holding tie rod end stud with 11/32" socket while loosening and removing
nut with wrench. Separate tie rod end from steering knuckle with Tie Rod Remover (MB-991113).
4. Remove steering knuckle-to-ball joint stud nut and bolt. Separate ball joint from steering knuckle by
prying against steering knuckle leg and lower control arm without damaging ball joint seal. Pull steering
knuckle assembly out and away from outer CV joint of axle shaft assembly while pulling CV joint out of
hub and bearing assembly. Use care NOT to separate inner CV joint during this operation, and DO NOT
allow axle shaft to hang by inner CV joint after removing outer CV joint from hub and bearing assembly.
5. Support outer end of axle shaft assembly. Carefully insert a pry bar between inner CV joint and transaxle
case without damaging transaxle oil seal. Pry against inner CV joint until tripod joint retaining snap ring
is disengaged from transaxle side gear.
6. Hold inner CV joint and interconnecting shaft of axle shaft assembly. Remove inner CV joint from
transaxle by pulling it straight out of transaxle side gear and transaxle oil seal without dragging splines or
snap ring across sealing lip of transaxle oil seal. See Fig. 2 .
Installation
1. Thoroughly clean splines and oil seal sealing surface on inner CV joint. Lightly lubricate oil seal sealing
surface on inner CV joint with fresh clean transmission fluid. Holding axle shaft assembly by hand at
inner CV joint and interconnecting shaft, install inner CV joint into transaxle side gear as far as possible
by hand.
2. Grasp inner CV joint and interconnecting shaft and forcefully push inner CV joint into side gear of
transaxle until snap ring is engaged with transaxle side gear. Test that snap ring is fully engaged with side
gear by attempting to remove inner CV joint from transaxle by hand. If snap ring is fully engaged with
side gear, inner CV joint cannot be removed by hand.
3. Clean all debris and moisture from steering knuckle where outer CV joint will be installed into steering
knuckle. Ensure that front of outer CV joint which fits against face of hub and bearing assembly is free of
debris and moisture before installing outer CV joint into hub and bearing assembly. See Fig. 15 . Slide axle shaft back into front hub and bearing assembly.
4. Install steering knuckle onto ball joint stud. Install and tighten NEW steering knuckle-to-ball joint stud
bolt and nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
5. Insert outer tie rod end into steering knuckle, and start nut onto tie rod end stud. Hold tie rod end stud
stationary with socket and tighten tie rod nut to specification with a wrench. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS . Install brake rotor on hub and bearing assembly.
6. Slide bottom of disc brake caliper assembly under abutment of steering knuckle, and then rotate top of
caliper assembly against top steering knuckle abutment. Tighten mounting bolts. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS . Clean all foreign matter from threads on end of axle shaft. Install wave washer and
hub nut on axle shaft and securely tighten nut.
7. Install front wheel and tire assembly. Install and tighten wheel lug nuts in criss-cross pattern. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Lower vehicle.
8. Have assistant apply brakes to keep hub from turning, and tighten hub nut to specification. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install nut lock and NEW cotter pin. Wrap cotter pin prongs tightly
around nut lock. Check vehicle alignment. See SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES - TRUCKS
article under WHEEL ALIGNMENT in SUSPENSION.
