My sons 01 neon started surging this morning. The auto shutoff relay is clicking which is causing the engine to cut out momentarily then run which is causeing the surging. My question is this, is the relay opening and closing due to another problem or is the relay gone bad? :help:

Simple way to find out... swap the auto-shutdown relay with another inferior relay, such as the horn relay. If the car runs and your horn doesnt work, guess what? You need a new relay. If the problem persists, the relay is fine, look elsewhere.

Change the relay same thing. It is smoking a lot and assuming it is loading up heavy emmision smell from exhaust. The smoke is bluish white.

Bluish smoke indicates burning oil. Head gasket leak?

Is there an easy way to check the head gasket?

Time for a compression test. Are you getting a Check engine light? Do the keydance if you are (turn key on-off-on-off-on within 5 seconds, i think the odometer or trip will tell you the codes on a 2nd Gen). Keep us posted.

I did the code check. No codes. Last week he changed a transmision cooling line that was leaking. He had to remove the breather box to do this. Is there something that could have came loose in the last week to cause an air leak or something to cause this? Checked the oil its fine no anti-freeze or gas in the oitl.

Check the pvc valve pipe and make sure it is attached to the intake manifold properly. Apart from that u can't really stuff anything up when taking the breather box out.

OK, what causes the auto shut down relay to cycle. I change the relay and still does it. There has to be events that cause this. Does anyone know? I have run the manual code check and with a reader. no codes. HELP!!!!!

The Automatic Shutdown (ASD) relay supplies battery voltage to the fuel injectors, electronic ignition coil and the heating elements in the oxygen sensors.

The PCM controls the ASD relay by switching the ground path for the solenoid side of the relay on and off. The PCM turns the ground path off when the ignition switch is in the Off position. When the ignition switch is in On or Start, the PCM monitors the crankshaft and camshaft position sensor signals to determine engine speed and ignition timing (coil dwell). If the PCM does not receive crankshaft and camshaft position sensor signals when the ignition switch is in the Run position, it will de-energize the ASD relay.

I'd say you have a bad cam or crank sensor. or the wiring for one of the sensors is bad

Both would throw a code, or should anyway. A bad crank sensor would cause the car to randomly die, and a bad cam sensor would kick the car into limp home mode.

I called the Dodge dealer today. Explained the problem. The service manager said it could be a bad ground. Checked the grounds. I could not find a bad ground still the same. I noticed today that when the car stalls the Idle Air Control Valve hums. If I unplug it it stops. When I plug it in it doesn't hum. When I shut the switch off and start car it begins again. Is this normal. It is not the fuel pump. I can here the fuel pump come on when I turn the key on and then stop. I listened to the IACV with a stethiscope to be sure it was the IACV.

35.00 for dealer to diagnous bad computer, 63.80 for used computer, put computer on myself total 98.80. FYI - found my computer on car-parts.com. Excellent sight. You can search nationally, by region or by state.

Car-parts.com is a great site IF the wreckng yards still have the part you need. They don't do a great job of keeping it up to date at times.

ebay is always flooded with used neon PCMs.... they usually go for $30-$45 shipped.

Car-Parts.com is not an answer all but is an excellent source for pricing and availability of hard to find parts. Almost every one of the listed yards have 800 numbers to call and check and to see if the part is still available and many have live chat capabilities now. Maybe you can find a PCM on ebay but add shipping and time to receive. I needed to part now. The yard I bought it from was 45 miles from my home and I could see what I was buying to insure I was receiving the right part. ;)
