Swapping from a manual to auto in gen III?????

I have a 97 Dakota with a 5 speed and I was thinking about swapping out the nv3500 for an auto trans. Anybody tried this swap? I wanted to get the consistency at the track, and the strength compared to the wimpy manual trans. I was gonna swap in either a 727/904 or the overdrive 518. I was gonna swap the rearend with an 8-3/4 at the same time so i'll prob be doing 3.91 or 4.10 gears. I'm not worried about mpg since this is going to be a street/strip truck (just streetable enough to get to the track..hehe). So i guess I wanted some details if someone else has done it, and some input on what trans would be ok. thanx

PS I think what I need to know the most is driveshaft length and the crossmember issues
