my 99 3 liter has 200.000 k and has developed a rattle under the intake plenem. I have changed dthe timming belt and checked the water pump and idler. it still rattles untill It goes above 1000 rpm . It sounds to me like the auto lash valve adjusters are knocking . I ran it with the front valve cover off and couldn't figure out where it''s comming from , the back one was to hard to get off. It sounds like all the cylinders do it not just one. Any one with any ideas , i'd be most grateful.
thanks thane

Your lifters sound worn or dirty. You could try doing an engine flush to see if it cleans out enough of the gum and deposits to free up the lifters. If that doesn't work, the lifters along with the cam will have to be replaced.

thanks for the input , I've tried running atf in the motor not under load. It changed the noise but didn't cure it . I'm now going to try running 15 40 in it to see if the noise changed . I went to dodge and they wanted 68.00 each for rockers and 24.00 each for auto lash adjusters times 16 adds up to wat a long block should cost.
thanks thane

Knocking or ticking? Knocking could be a lot of other things. Ticking would be valve train or even bad exhaust gasket. Knocking could be from the anti knock sensor, crank position sensor, temp sensor, all dealing with timing, or worse like wrist pins, rod bearings, etc...

Dude my '98 had the same trouble. these 3.0 engines are famous for the ticking sound
I started changing oil more often with 5w30 full synthetic oil a couple years ago and right now it has 285,000 kms and no tick!
