When Dodge first envisioned building a performance version of its Neon subcompact, internal estimates suggested sales might reach 1000 per year. By the time the vehicle hit the market earlier this year, that number had already been revised upward to 3000. Now Dodge marketing chief David Kimball says the earlier projections need another adjustment, given the company is on track to sell 10,000 SRT-4s per year and will likely decide soon to boost annual production to 13,000 cars. The SRT-4 will still be hard to come by, no doubt, considering the 2004 model’s horsepower increases by 15 to 230 hp and the car gets a limited-slip differential, all for the slightly higher base price of $20,995.

that 230hp is supposed to be at the crank....well one of my import mags done a Chassis Dyno on the 2003 which is only supposed to be 215 at the crank, turns out that after just a lil tuning on the motor (No aftermarket parts at all) they posted 221hp@front wheels...... Is Dodge once again Underrating power for insurance reasons?????

Well, that sounds encouraging they need to up the ante quite a bit to compete with the new sti.

what are the evo and sti?
The srt 4 is bad ass! but im working with the neon I have. Planning to add a spoiler, intake, dual exaust, white guages, viper alarm with keyless entery, new tires, cd changer for now. That might be it or might not be. Im just sticking with things I can use later on in another ride. Im still planning on getting an srt 4 down the road sometime, but I want to get a truck first....

It should be noted that the Evo and STi are about 10k more though. So SRT4s are still mighty attractive on that front. :D

i've got an 03 celica and i paid more for it then i would if i would have bought the SRT-4...........and it is way faster. The Srt-4 IMO is the mighty underdog of the sports "compact" car world. I cant wait to dump my civic(my "other" car) and get a SRT-4.

the evo is fast but its watered down compared to what it should be, they cut out alot of gadgets that made the car stand out, i for one was upset about it because dealers were still marking in up real high as if it were imported with the japanese specs, i did some research and i could import one from japan and make it us street legal with the AYC and the ACD, i don't even know if the U.S. Evo has a water spray kit. I haven't gotten into the sti yet, but i've seen some stuff on it and i'm still check things out, its got that dccd which is cool but i'd put my money on the srt-4. something about that car just grabs you, it must be that heratage of solid cars.

The 2004 SRT 4 is rated 230hp at the crank, and I read on Allpar.com that it was dynoed at 223 whp.

More like Dodge understated the HP, all the better to delight customers and confound competitors. This trend will continue...

Yep. My '04 SRT-4 dynoed 224 to the wheels. What I have heard is that the ratings are crank ratings, but they were done under worst-case conditions (e.g. at altitude, high heat, etc.) so that the performance most people see is very good. I love it!
