My Grand Pa has a 94 Intrepid with (what I believe to be) some electrical issues. Sometimes the car will not shift out of first gear (automatic trans), sometimes it does. The failure to shift is usually accompanied with failure in the dash lights. The condition will usually go away by 1. wiggling the gear shift, 2 shaking the steering wheel, 3 hitting the steering column.
The trans has been verified by a dealer as being sound, but it seems like their is a connection bad in the steering column or something similar.
Has anyone experienced this problem?
If so, what was done to correct it?
Does anyone have a wiring diagram / schematic associated with the steering column / trans / dash lights?

I usually do not get on the net, so I'd appreciate an email with any helpful info.
This is not an attempt to get anyones email address for junk mail, but a sincere request for help.

Thank you in advance

Terry,

Welcome to Dodgetalk!

Your problem might be a speed sensor. If one of your speed sensors is going bad it will kill the speedo and dash and the PCM of the the car will put the drivetrain into LIMP mode witch will only go about 30-35mpg and wont shift. Check it out.

Good luck!

It should have a fault code if it is a bad sensor and going into limp-mode.

We have had intermittent failures with bad ignition switches, might explain why some of your remedies work. Could also be a remote car starter problem as well if so equipped.

Hope this helps:)
