Just bought a 1985 (4) wheel drive in Minauqua, WI(sp)? and drove it down to the Chicago area and it did a great job. I am now registering it and I'm not sure if it's a W or D or what? I know it has a 360 =- rebuilt 40,000 ago and starts like a charm.

I'm also just starting to get a little clang - like the the tranny bell is being rung when I just about stop from a roll. Was told its the calliper bracket slapping from the front disks - sounds more like the middle of the truck though(?)

Bought it for a second in my company, but if I can get ahead of the rust, I just might restore this thing. Portion of the floor needs repair and the cab connection to frame (back portion) is kind of shot.

Hope someone can help me here, I'm sure the VIN tells me if a W, but I don't know how to read the thing.

Thanks. Don

If it's 2WD, it's a 'D' .... 4WD, it's a 'W' .... Quick and easy to figure that one out.. ;)

So far as the 'clang', need more details....

'Rust' repair panels are easy to find and cheap. Prob is, they are mostly "Made In China" and the 'fit' is good, but not perfect. I guess we can only be thankful they ARE there... :D

Thanks for the W answer - yes it is a 4 wheel, with mudders!
The clang sounds kind of like a medium bell sound - best description.
And I'm planning to work on the panels with fiberglass now, but it's the floor board in one section thats the drag. Guess I'll have to find a good bodyman to do some sheetmetal for me.
