I have a 1979 dodge w 200, 360, dana 44 front dana 60 rear. my question is what is the difference in the 3500 lb front and the 4500lb front. is it the 44 is the 3500 and the 60 the 4500. got axle shafts off a guy and he said they were from a truck excatly like mine and the passengers side fit great but the drives side was about an inch longer. was just wondering if there was something funny about the axle shafts or the axle in my truck. when i bought the truck the guy bought it brand new in 79 but not sure if he switched anything or not. any info would be greatly appreicated

Maybe you got 2 pass side axles? I dunno, I'm not up on my 4x4 stuff.

The 3500 lb axle was standard on the W200 and 4500 optional. The 4500 lb axle was the only one available for the W300, so I think you are right that the Dana 44 is the 3500 lb axle and the Dana 60 is the 4500 lb.
As far as the length of the shaft, there were probably several different configurations for diameter, spline count and length for different years and manufactures that used Dana 44's. I would google online to find the exact specs for your specific vehicle to make sure you have the right shafts.
