The rear power windows stick in the closed position and will only open by cycling the switches several times. Examining the switches shows them to be enclosed in a box behind the plastic covering. Is it common to see this failure and is it possibly the motors.

When you say "stick," do you mean the motors are not working? Or that the windows stick to the rubber molding? If the windows stick, apply spray silicone to the rubber seals. As for common, I've heard of them failing, but I wouldn't say that it's a major problem. However, if both of the motors are inoperative, I'd put my money on a bad switche before suspecting both motors.

While it is true that burning out both motors is not likely, I'd say test the switches before you throw parts at it. Not too long ago, I had a buddy with the same problem, both of his back windows stopped working. I suggested to him that it was likely either a fuse, or the switch. The fuses were good, so he just replaced the switch without testing. It turns out his old switch was fine, both window motors had gone bad.

I had a left one go bad. it worked intermittently and then worked in reverse for a while. Then it went dead. I just replaced it with a used one from a salvage yard for $25. Check www.car-part.com
