I'm looking at acquiring a mid 80's 350 4x4 with a single tire rear axle. The use I have in mind for it will be better suited with a dual tire rear end. I would imagine there are converters to bolt to the outside of the inner regular wheel to allow a second regular single style wheel to be bolted up to it. I believe there are a number of dual rear wheel axles available locally but I am not experienced with the 70's and 80's models to know exactly what this might involve. Anyone with experience out there who has swapped in a dually rear end. I'm not concerned about different wheel styles between the front and rear or possible variations in the tracking. I'll need the extra stability the duals will offer. Thanks

Lol thanks :) True though.

Anyway, the dually rear should bolt right in, same differential basically. However the dually rear is a bit wider overall, so that the inner tire clears the bed. While you can run it like this, I'd recommend at least get a set of dually flares and cutting out your bed to fit them, if not just buying the whole bed and swapping it out. Otherwise the outer tires will be throing a lot of dirt and such around.

Thanks, I was hoping that would be the case. It has a maintenance bed on it right now and I plan on putting on a steel dump bed built for 1 Tons so wheel well clearance shouldn't be an issue. Since it is 4X4 I will use it to get into some situations on a mountain side that will really need the duals to keep it upright and help with a shifting load. Most of these trucks ran anywhere from 354's to 456's with 411 being the most common I imagine. Then there is also the possibility that the single rear is the same Dana series as the dual so I can simply swap out the gears if needed.
