Hi there,

I have a 2001 grand caravan sport, V6/3.3 with 90,000 miles.
A few days ago, the check engine light turned on and the transmission would not shift even with very high RPM. It seems that it stays all the time in the second or third gear. When I try to shift into L, N ... R, the transmission takes it but the van would jerk a little. I checked for codes and I got P605 and P700.
What I have done so far: Replaced transmission fluid and filter; replaced both speed sensors. Needless to say - did not fix the problem.

Any advice or suggestion will be appreciated.

I would disconnect the battery for at least 15 minutes. There might be some error that has developed in the TCM that might be cleared by disconnecting the battery. The codes suggest that the TCM needs to be replaced.

If you checked the codes using the key on/off method, then it will not show you the codes stored in the TCM. Go to Autozone and use their code scanner-- that will give you any additional TCM codes. The P0700 just indicates that the TCM has told the PCM that it has a code stored in it.

Thanks guys for responses.

"I would disconnect the battery for at least 15 minutes. There might be some error that has developed in the TCM that might be cleared by disconnecting the battery. The codes suggest that the TCM needs to be replaced."

I disconnected the battery again (did it already when I was working with speed sensors) and it did not change anything.

Actually, using the key on/off method, I got only P0700 code. I went to the nearest Autozone and they got P0605 and P0700 codes. They printed out it for me and it says:
P0605 - Definition: TCM ROM fault;
- Explanation: ECM detected a ROM self test failure within the TCM
- Probable Causes:
1. Shorted solenoid or sensor within transmission
2. Shorted electrical circuit
3. Failed TCM
P0700 - Definition: Transaxle control system fault
- Explanation: ECM received a signal that transaxle control module has
a fault
- Probable causes:
1. Shorted or open circuit within transaxle
2. Failure of TCM

I do not know if they have a way to access the TCM module and get any more specific code, which would narrow down to a faulty component. All what I got is what is written above.

Any suggestion would be still welcomed.

The "Most Likely" problem which happens "Most of the Time" is that your solenoid pack is bad.

When it goes bad (It is replaced as a unit) your tranny runs in limp mode which is, it stays in second gear.

Good luck-

hello, i am having the same problem and it is at the dealer as we speak... were you able to find out what your problem on your caravan was? if so how much did it cost you? i have the same codes and was told the tcm needs to be replaced. they are charging me about $600.00 total including part (TCM) and labor. Interesting enough I found out from Chrysler/Dodge that there is still a warranty 8yrs/80,000 miles for my PCM. My 2001 caravan has only 64,000 miles on it. Does anyone know if the tcm should be the same as the PCM?

You will get a code pointing to the solenoid pack when it has a problem,he does not have a code for that. Example:2-4 Hydraulic Pressure Switch Circuit,OD Pressure Switch Sense Circuit etc.

TCM Transmission Control Module
PCM Power Train Control Module
Sounds the same to me!
It depends on how "technical" you want to get I guess. If they don't want to warranty then they are just using a "loop hole" IMO. They are calling the PCM the engine computer.

Well, I had to go a dealer to finally figure out what was wrong. And it was TCM, which they replaced for about $400.00. The thing is, they do not use new TCMs but rather refurbished. What happened to me is that on my way home from the dealer (just a couple miles distance), I got the same problem and returned my minivan back to them right away. They replaced the TCM once again (free of charge) with an explanation that the first replaced TCM was bad ??? So, be careful !!!

I really do not know about that possible warranty 8/80,000, but as somebody already said in this post, they will find a way to avoid it.

Once again, thank to all guys for opinions and suggestions.
