I get some low speed (under 35-40) dead spots in acceleration. Seems to run OK above that. Anyway...I have checked fuel system, vacuum system and am starting to check the ignition system. Replaced distributor cap-plug wires-coil wire and checked spark at the plugs. Took a look at the coil and discovered that it is the kind that says 'no external resistor required'. Everything I've read says that the 88 D100 V6 has an external ballast resistor. Needless to say I am confused and wondering where this coil came from and whether or not I should get rid of it and install a new one with an external ballast resistor. Thanks for your comments and help.

I went back and found two vacuum lines with leaky spots, fixed-em then checked the idle speed (it was way low, so I set it to specs and presto! The engine has started behaving close to normal. As soon as I get a little time I'll check the timing and see what it's doing. I am still wondering about the coil with an attached resistor and the absence of a firewall mounted external ballast resistor.

I'm glad you figured it out. I wasn't sure what to tell you. I believe the coil is alright with the internal ballast resistor. Most of the aftermarket coils have the internal resistor. It would be bad if you had both the internal ballast resistor and the external ballast resistor.

Your truck should not be equipped with a ballast resistor. Once Mopar put ECM's in, they eliminated the ballast resistor. Even my '85 Ram Van was not originally equipped with a ballast resistor.
