Guage Problem on 99 Grand Caravan

My entire instrument panel went out. ..fuel/speedo/tach/temp. Trip and odometer lights out. Got new panel to replace old. When I turned on...nothing...that was until I shifted car into reverse to go out driveway. All of a sudden fuel guage came up, odometer and "gear lights " came on Speedo/Tach and temp still out. Odometer doesn't work Im guessing due to speedo not working. The "gear lights" come on and after about 10 seconds the little gear indicator square comes on....around every letter. When I turn the van off and back on. guages remain "dead" that is until I shift into reverse or drive and again those three guages come to life with the others remaining out. Any suggestions.

Now I recall that people mentioning taking a fuse out to reset the whole thing, also have heard some resoldering the connections on the back of the cluster. Do a search or even a google for this.
