Dealership says I spun a bearing on the crank. Now they want over $7000 to repair. Say I need a new short block and head in addition to parts and labor. Anyone had any experience with this? I have had this happen before in a V8 and all we did was drop the pan, pull the crank, machine, replace bearings and reassemble.

well sometimes the dealers go overboard on replacing parts in order for them to guarantee their work but I've seen the bearing journals overheat and distort and no matter if you replace or machine those parts you mentioned you might end up damaging them again. I guess all I can say is ask the dealer why your block has to be replaced? Did it overheat or distorted? I'm not sure why a spun crank bearing would necessitate changing the heads.

No, it never overheated. I think it just got low on oil or low on pressure. It is a rod bearing that spun.

Than I don't know why they would say that you need a new block. Did they give you a reason? Were the heads damaged?

My guess is that the dealership is thinking that if you lost that much oil pressure to spin a rod bearing, that it probably also damaged camshaft bearings/possible camshaft lobes, etc.

Until they find the exact cause of the problem, no shop would want to be responsible for fixing only the spun bearing--unless you offered to sign a waiver relieving them of any additional responsibility.

In the meantime, find a local engine rebuilder that offers remove/replace services and offers a guarantee. Get a quote on a rebuilt engine from them

What year is your van?
Check this site:http://www.onlinemoparparts.com/engines.php
I have never used them, so it is at your own risk, but I am thinking the dealer is overpriced.

I would think that for around $3000-$4000 is what the cost should be. The heads should be ok.

It is a 2003. I think they want to replace the head because the piston may have made contact with it.

I am guessing that it didn't contact the head.
We aren't talking super high compression.

It Spun the #4 Rod Bearing. That is something that should be able to be fixed by getting the crank turned and replacing the bearing. Definitely not a $7600 job!!

I smell a little gouging here

Have you given any thought to a used engine?
