I have a 93 intrepid 3.3L w/ 147,000 miles. I have an intermittent problem that occurs during start up, All the cluster gauges and warning lights do not come on, when you shift into drive the transmission stays in 2nd gear and does not up shift when driving! Sometimes after about a couple minutes of driving, the gauges and warning lights will come back to life and also the transmission will begin to operate normally. What could be the cause of this problem!?? Is there any TSB's that can guide me or do any other owners experience this problem also!??
Thanx ahead of time!!

I have a 95 Intrepid it does the exact same thing. I,m wondering if it is elecrical or something to do with the transmission? If you find out or anyone else knows of the problem I would sure love to know what it is! Thanks Chargerman.

it sounds like an input/output sensor for the tranny, see if you can get to a tranny shop and have the codes read.

Could be a bad ignition switch!!

I have a 95 Intrepid with the same problems. At times when I go to start it the dash lights won't come on then it is stuck in second gear. It may come back while driving but the airbag light stays on. Now when i use my 3rd party remote starter everything works fine, though it may still cut out when driving. This shed any more light on the problem? Kinda sucks when going down the highway and it drops into second gear.

your remote starter is acting in place of the ignition switch,
that would be the first thing I would replace. Make sure the wiring is good to it before you replace it though, no broken wires etc.

I think it has something to do with the remote starter. I will take a look at it first and then maybe try and unhooking it for awhile. It is so darn nice to have it working though here in Ontario. Thanx again Maveric and 6-pack.
P.S. I,ll let you know how I make out.

I'm still talking about a suspected faulty ignition switch here.

Sorry I misinterpreted what you were saying. I will also check out the ignition switch.

thanx for setting me straight 6-pack!

Just wanted to make sure you were headed in the right direction.
Makes sure the wiring to your switch is ok, and make sure the harness didn't get damaged where they spliced your remote starter in.

I have a 95 Intrepid. Same symptoms 93dipertni described. I thought maybe it was a solenoid that failed to pull in at start up. Turning off the engine and restarting, then things would be alright. I looked and couldn't find any solenoids that might do this. Also, can't find any decent wiring diagrams, that would help alot. Twice last week, the transmission suddenly downshifted when I was going 120km/hr on the highway. Not sure if it went to second or first. The sudden lurch jolted things back to normal. The pavement was dry thankfully. If this happened at highway speed on an icy highway it could result in disaster. If I can't get this fugured out by next fall then "95 Intrepid for sale".

Did any of you replace the ignition switch and did that solve the problem? It would really be nice to have a wiring diagram and fully understand what has happened and know it is fixed for sure.

Sounds like the transmittion speed sensor. $20 replacement should fix it.

The speed sensor sounded logical. I replaced the transmission output speed sensor a few weeks ago now. I waited to see how things went, since it is an intermittent problem. Unfortunately, the condition still happens occasionally at start up. Could be it is as simple (expensive) as replacing the ignition switch.

as many people had the same problem as you and it was solved by the speed sensor, I would have thought that would have worked. Sorry to hear you have the same problem. If I think of anything else to check I will post back here for you.

I guess there is also the possibility that there is a fault in the wiring to the speed sensor. I really do hate intermittent problems! If it would happen all the time it would be easier to find. Hopefully it doesn't become a permanent problem when I'm a few hundred km from home.

Okay I fixed the problem! It turns out the "IGNITION SWITCH" was bad! Honestly don't remember the price of it, also the current switch is kinda acting up again. Nothing drastic like before. You will need a "TORX" screwdriver to remove the steering column panels. Very easy to replace and only took about 30-45 mins. Thanks for everyones input and to those who are still trying to figure it out, change the switch immediately!

I found a different solution. The heater also started acting up and pretty much quit when I was 650 km from home. I traded it in.

Trade it in ............. Sounds like the perfect Solution to me . I`m considering that same solution for my 96.

I changed the ignition switch. There is 2 or 3 sets of points in there that were corroded and dirty. Everything works fine now even the hard downshift in the tranny. I don,t know how it took it. Glad I found the trouble. Could be very dangerous in slippery conditions.
