I recently bought a 2003 2500 sprinter w/49k mi at an auction. It has some sheet metal damage due to a slow speed tipover. I replaced the oil soaked air filter and have since put 200 mi on it. It runs smooth, quiet,no smoke, and got 26mpg, but lacks power. It also wont automatically downshift until the rpm is +_ 1k rpm. Even if throttle petal is flored it wont kick down. Can I buy a diagnostic tester to plug into the comuter that would tell me problems? Any Ideas greatly appreciated, Thanks, Guy

Hi Guy
OK you brought a vehicle at auction damaged! However you have given very little to follow up on???
Is there any assist codes showing as a fault? purchasing a cheap scan gauge will not tell you an awful lot as you need to understand what the codes means and more than often they are vague.
Even a proper BRD111 scanner can be as evasive in evaluating the codes and these cost over three grand :help: there are after market online assist programs for the Sprinters but even these cost over $2500
It would be more simple to take it the dealer and let them sort it out, as indicated you had a blocked filter , if it was on it's side there may be a busted glow plug or a particularity blocked one , this would effect RPM and possiable down shift, up shifting, I'm inclined to think you may have something bent or a pawl valve malfunctioning on the trans , broken sensor will also prevent the trans from working, Sprinters can be difficult to work on and expensive to fix, You really need a qualified Diesel teck guy who specializes on the Dodge Sprinter.
