you did not say if the truck is carburetted or fuel injected
I reckon carburetted
I would suggest the first things to do would be:
tune up with plugs and wires
new air filter
fuel filter
run some carb cleaner
test the fuel pump to see if you are getting adequate flow and pressure
check base ignition timing and check to see if the vacuum and centrifugal advances are working
do a compression check
Whenever you are dealing with a lack of power, you need to get back to basics, that is:
adequate and properly times spark
adequate fuel
a good supply of air
good compression
I have a soft spot for the slant six
I would swap one for my 318 in a flash

Sometimes retarded timing can cause stalling.

That's one durable motor you've got there young man! My first truck was a 1984 D100 2WD auto w/ the slant six. Not the most powerful motor out there, I think like 90 bHP! But I know farmers with early 80's trucks with well over 300,000 miles, just maintain it well and she'll run like a champ.
It is a fairly easy truck to work on, with all the room and such under the hood, take it to a competent mechanic and it should run better.
Good luck to ya!

It could be just the choke or the carb could be loose. Might even need a rebuild on the Holley 1945. But, I would go for the Holley 1920 or even better a Carter YF or YFA. Best would be to find a super six 2bbl intake with a 2bbl carb to put on it. Here are some of the things I've been thru. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/658846

You do know that the bell housing will be different for the V8. Slant6 bell housing only goes with slant6's.

Heh heh heh.... I know what you mean Acton....
My ol' 66' A-100 had a /6 and (No bulls**t) it had 400,000 miles on it (643737 km, for you ;) ) before it finally gave up the ghost.....
The only reason I didn't R&R the engine, and still have that rig, is because it's SUCH a PITA pulling (Or dropping) the engine on those.... And I didn't have the means at the time (No 'shop' in other words)
/6 though..... Gotta love em'!! :D One of the best engines ever built....

I learne how to drive in my Dad's 65 Dodge D100 slant 6 with a 3 in the tree. That truck stood up to my teenage maniac driving with no ill effects...except for some major dents.

Hey, my dad had a 66' D-100, with a /6... auto...
He sold it after about 3 years of having it, (Many good camping trips remembered from my youth ;) ) because his job changed, he needed a different rig, and my mom REFUSED to drive a (Ewwww!) "TRUCK"....
I don't think I ever remember seeing a grown man, come close to tears, because he had to give up something he had his heart n' soul into.
I think I was only about 13 years old, but I still remember him driving by, every week, the guy that bought it from him... Just to make sure he was taking care of his truck...
Back then, being a kid... I didn't 'get it'. I do now.. ;)

Ya... I loved driving that old truck. Not to many did though because you had to turn the steering wheel 1/2 a turn before it affected the wheels.
