I have a 1978 Lil Red Truck, just rebuilt the engine and have a couple of questions about the thermoquad I am using. First, can I adjust the choke takeoff somehow? The truck starts immediately when cold, the choke opens a little because of the choke takeoff, but not enough, the engine runs extremly rich, black smoke like crazy, once warm she's fine, the choke is fully opened. The second question, when I am accelerating and the secondaries kick in there is a slight bog, what can I do to cure this?

Here is a couple of things that may help someone in the future that I have found. When I first got the the truck running she would start just fine and was working like a clock till she was nice and warm, then it would start missing and backfiring and run like crap. I thought maybe a fuel supply prob and checked the tank pickup, fuel pump and lines all OK, changed the ballast resistor thinking that was the trouble, no luck, turns out the coil was at fault, lots of spark when cool, very little when hot, put a new one in and problem solved.

The other little thing that was giving me trouble was the fuel gauge stopped working. I removed the sender from the tank and found that the little brass float had a crack in it and was full of fuel. Talked to the dealer and they tell me that the brass float was not sold seperately and I had to buy a whole sending unit for $200.00! So I did a little research and found out that Ford uses the same sender and they sell the little brass float, cost me $11.00. In case anyone has run into the same problem the Ford part number is COAZ-9202-B.

There is a way to eliminate the bog, but I don't know exactly what. I've talked to several old-timers that used to run them and they always mention they know how, but never really said how :(

You adjust it by bending the rod that attaches the choke to the the choke thermostat (Bolted to the intake)
Shorter rod = more open choke.
Be easy on it, a little bend makes a big difference ;)

Adjust the choke pull-off to open a little more. I believe the sec.airvalve can be adjusted
