Decided to make a Hail Mary pass on my '87 D-100, replacing the remaining catalytic converter in an attempt to get the truck to pass emissions before I can renew the registration that expires at the end of the month. Well, take a look at what I found when I pulled the old cat out from under the truck:
I cut the second hole to see if there as anything left in there. Funny how the truck won't pass emissions with a gutted cat. Replaced the rest of the exhaust system along with the cat (the head pipe was replaced last Summer with the exhaust manifold.) Hmm... I'm going for the emissions test tomorrow. If it passes, then I can renew the registration and then go back to saving money for the crate motor.

And the truck passed. Funny how that works, and funny how it passed the visual inspection the first time even with the big hole cut in the cat and welded up. Now I can go back to saving up for that 360 crate motor.

YEE-HAH!
Congrats! (Bet your sleeping a little easier now, huh?)
Yeah, I'll bet you dropped the cat.... Looked at the big square weld on it and slapped yourself upside the head saying "Well NO FREEKIN' WONDER!"
Good to see there bud! :D

I'd gut again :D You should make so it bolts in, and every year after inspection just take the cat back off and run a test pipe in it's place ;)

Actually, the mark on my head is from dropping one of those big ol' exhaust hangers right on my temple, but the result is the same. Haven't had to sleep since the truck passed this morning, but I'm sure I will sleep well. The whole emissions/registration renewal thing was looming large. I know the engine will need to be replaced. The difference is now I can wait and squirrel away the parts to swap in a V8 instead of a quicky slant 6 long block. I'm thinking one of those pre-Magnum 360s the sell for claimer class stock car racing. Not too expensive and it makes pretty good power.

Hey, you know what Jimal?
At gas getting damn-near $3.00 a gallon again, I think I'd be looking at getting a nice quality remanufactured /6..... That's just me though, and it's already what ya got under the hood....

I was thinking about it. If I was going to do a six, I was going to upgrade to a Comp Cams 260H cam and lifters along with a Super Six 2-barrel manifold. That being said, I don't drive this truck enough for fuel mileage to be a major factor in the decision. The ride to work yesterday (90 mile round trip) to get a good hot soak before the retest was about as far as the truck is going to go for me. The rest of the time its in-town runs to Home Depot or bulky waste.
Regardless of which motor I go with, the next things to attend to are a front suspension rebuild (saggy springs, loose steering) and rear brakes. I'd also like to remove the dealer installed A/C, but that might be more involved than I'd like to get at the moment.
