Just rebuilt the engine in my 78 Lil Red Truck, been running for about a week now, still fixing little bugs here and there, when all of a sudden went to go for a spin today and the tranny wont shift out of first, goes into drive and reverse no prob, no slipping, just wont upshift. Am I in for tranny rebuild? Or something I can do myself? Checked the linkages, all fine, including the kickdown linkage.
Thanks

Yes, fluid level is where it is supposed to be.

How's the smell? Burnt or normal?

There is no burnt smell, the tranny shifts into drive and reverse firmly, no slippage whatsoever, I can smoke the tires easily, just will not shift out of first

Sounds like the kickdown is adjusted up too tight.

If it was working OK one day and not the next it could be a stuck governor at the rear of the trans or a stuck 1-2 shift valve in the valve body. You probably won't need a rebuild. I agree, change the fluid and filter before any thing else.

I checked all linkages, everything fine, the funny thing is that one day its fine and the next wont shift, happened so suddenly. Talked to a local tranny shop and they were a little stumped at first but seem to think that maybe a band broke, guess I will have to take it in to them.
Thanks all for responding, if I get the truck into the shop soon enough I wll repost and let you all know what went wrong.

Ok, got her back from the shop and turns out that there are little clips in the governor that hold some little weights in place, well they broke for some reason causing a pressure loss resulting in no upshift. Cost me $300, and everything else seems fine in the tranny, lucky break I guess, I was expecting at least a grand for a repair.
