Carburators have finally driven me mad!:VHOT: Swapped out the intakes last night, put my 2bbl intake back on. 4bbl was just too much for this engine, and was having problems w/ flooding every time I opened it up and sometimes when I hit the brakes.
So, I get it all swapped, put my old 2bbl back on, crank it up. It floods. Swap in another carb, it floods too. :banghead: I spent like 3 hrs last night, trying to make a 2bbl that worked, couldn't do it. I might try to mess w/ it a bit more, but EFI is coming ASAP.

Brand new pump, about 3 months old, maybe less. Yeah, since the swap, but doesn't have anything to do w/ it I don't think. I finally got a 2bbl that works on it today, but it's still not quite right. I think I'm gonna go through all my BBD's tonight and make one good one, and chunk the rest. Probably put my Eddy 4bbl back together as well, and maybe pop the top on my 360 2bbl, make sure it's clean inside too. Plus, I got a '73 Ford 2000 tractor carb I gotta build for a guy too

My two dodge pickups have carbs, as my 68 galaxie. My two crown vics are EFI. Everytime I take a long trip in the crown vics, I always have it in the back of my mind, ~what if the fuel pump goes sour in the tank. ~What if the computer goes haywire?~~ I just feel safer with a carb, and old technology, If I could have it my way, Id run nothing but carbs....Just stick with it, you`ll get them carbs running ok. CHeck the float, needle & seat, two problem areas that will make it flood. Plus, either the technology that the govt has, or a nuclear event, will render the EFI useless. They now have devices that can fly over you, and shut you down. The ON STAR system can do the same.....But, a carbed engine will just keep on running and running.

Speed, you seem to have a lot of probs with 'flooding' no matter what carb you got on there.... (At least from what you say...)
Are YOU SURE it's the prob of the carb(s) themselves? I mean, I could see ONE being bad, but 1-2-3?
(This is another reason why I love electric fuel pumps.... The float bowl is full... the pump stops...)
Hmmmm.... Maybe too much volume and/or pressure from the 'stock' mechanical pump? Maybe an 'in-line' pressure regulator might help? (Sure as sh*t can't HURT..)
I'm puzzled, Bud.... It sounds to me like something OTHER than the carb....

Oh I still got a couple points distributors and some good carbs ;)
bherder, I've been having the same thought, maybe too much pressure? Never heard of it before on a mechanical fuel pump, but I suppose it's possible. But why is it not doing it to the carb on there now? With the AFB, it was only when I either went WOT, or when I got on the brakes real quick/hard.
I think the main problem is I'm trying to use old, used crap that's been sitting for years. Carbs don't really like being stored. I'm too cheap, damn it :)

Heh heh heh... Hey Farmguy.....
You and I are/have been along the same line for quite a while now.... (Even if we didn't know it)
I've done a lot of research along these lines...
And you ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT about 'carbed' engines... But you should also have (As a spare) a 'points' ignition dist. (I do)...
The electro-magnetic force 'shockwave' will render even primitive ignition systems (Like what we have in our 70's rigs) completely useless....
A 'points' type ignition and a carburetor.... You're 'good to go', no matter what....
(BTW.... I don't trust the Fed's or any of their lies, as far as I could sh*t them out my azz... I guess that's why I almost live in Idaho... :D )

I agree about the new pump making excess pressure. I was having the same problem on my avenger after a new fuel pump so i put on a regulator and it is perfect now. Man I did not know about the new cars vulnerbility to the Gov't. Creepy!
...I can't make one good carb? Built one tonight, now it will crank up w/ about 3 pumps, but runs out of gas right away. Pump it again, cranks right up, runs out again immediately. Can't even pump it and keep it running. Maybe the intake is junk or something. It would crank w/o even having to pump it w/ the 4bbl intake.
I have more weird problems... :(

Well I finally got it going again, apparently my old single plane 318 intake has a problem, what I don't know, but I swapped on my 360 dual plane and Holley 2bbl, and it runs great.
I think the 318 intake was warped or something, maybe wasn't pulling up tight enough and letting the gaskets leak. I didn't put any sealer around the ports like I usually do. I did this time though :D
B-300
03-31-2007, 03:16 PM
If a manifold swap fixed it there could be a few differences between them.
1. A cracked manifold (underside) will allow the exhaust crossover to become EGR thats on always... poor or no idle.
2. A carb tuned to work on a dual plane manifold won't work with a carb tuned for a single manifold and vise-versa.
3. 318 2bbl heads and 360 heads have different port sizes.

Well shit, I think my engine's junk. This friggin' carb won't idle now either. I think the heads are junk, probably the valve seats, as I don't think they replaced them when I had them done. Heads are off a '67 truck, so I'm sure they didn't have hardened seats. This is like 5 carbs and 3 intakes, and none of them worked just right. Also there is some blowby now.
BTW B-300, not all 360s had big ports. Regular non-J trucks heads have the same small ports as the 318.

This is a B-300 reality-check. I now that not all 360's have large port heads... I mentioned this only because you were swappining manifolds of the 2bbl onto an engine that had a 4bbl intake and should of had large port heads to take advantage of the flow for power gain.

--B-300--Ahh, I gotcha. However, the engine had small port '67 318 heads, and the 360 2bbl manifold had the small ports as well. I actually don't have any big port stuff.
B-300
04-09-2007, 03:27 PM
Small port heads were used on 273, 318 and 360 2bbl's, large port heads were used on later 318 4 bbl and all 340 and 360 4bbl engines as original equipment until the magnum engine.
So you put a 340 cam in your 318 with a 4bbl and didn't change to large port heads? .. Sometime ago you were looking for more power.

Yeah, I was kinda experimenting, just to see what a cam change would do for a stock 318. Apparently not much :( Also small port heads will keep the velocity up better at low rpms, better for street trucks. I do have a set of 302 casting I'm gonna have done for my next build. BTW, I've turned a 360 w/ small ports, cam, headers and a 2bbl ( a BBD 2bbl at that) to 6200 rpms, pulled good all the way up to that.
