Does it completely stall or run poorly?

when it starts this if you let of the gas just a little it like comes back to life.but if you try to keep going it will progressively get worse an then sometimes it will backfire through the carburetor. then you have to set longer before it will drive right this is why i thought it was the coil getting over heated an not firiing right .see it purrs like a kitten except for when it does this. it more like it loses fire the carburetor over fills an then it gets fire again .thus the back fire in the carburetor.its got to be something simple but i just can`t figure it out. :VHOT:

I had a problem similar to yours caused by an ECU module on my '79 B100 van where it would behave itself "purrrfectly" for a while, then randomly begin sputtering, bucking, and stalling out. It also did the sort of thing you mentioned about restarting after a cool down. Little consolation that was in city driving!
Swapping the ECU cured it. Eventually (in about a year) it came back; I still had the original ECU with me (packrat that I am!) and swapping the original ECU back in cured it. What!? -Yep; it was a bad ground. Dodge relied on the mounting screws on their modules to provide an electrical ground. The amount of corrosion necessary to upset good electrical contact isn't necessarily visible. You could try loosening and retightening the grounds on your ECU or computer and also the Voltage Regulator and see if that helps. I've taken to applying dielectric grease to the module mounting screws to reduce their exposure to the elements and it seems to help - the problem has never returned.

Unfortunately your van may be equipped with the god-awful ESA (Electronic Spark Advance) system which was one of Chrysler's first attempts at an engine computer. These were notorious for failing. I had to replace the one in my '85 a while back.

thank you so much for your input. it has helped me narrow down the problem.the corrosion on the mounting screws good be the problem. this van sat up 3 years with out being driven. so this more likely to be that type of problem. will let you know if that does it
