Ok, for the last year my 2001 1500 5.2 doge ram van engine light would come on and it would run sluggish, and everyone including Dealer could not get a code and I was told the cost would be from 200.00 to 3000.00 I would not be in business if I estimated like that, I would just disconnect my battery, clear the code and be on my way untill a month or soon it would happen again. So FINALLY this past week my engine light came on and would not clear, I got the code P1756 and repaired the sensor and selonoid and it ran like the TOP... for a day, Now my engine light is back on again. I feel something has caused the P1756 code and damage which I replaced but feel I got to find what is causing the engine light to come on so I do not have to get the p1756 code again and do another 500.00 dollors worth of tranny work. Then again that just might have been coincidence, A mechanic told me to clean or replace the EGR Valve thinking that is what causes the eng light and no code.

ANY IDEAS ON WHAT IS MAKING THIS ENG LIGHT COME ON, the van does run like crap when it does, I clear the code runs good for a day or three and back to the light on

Thanks TOM

There is nothing that causes an engine light an no code. Get the codes read, and post them. It may be a system specific code, such as a transmission or body control module code, which often require key cards or a DRB II Chrysler scanner to read.

Also, if the light is coming on and going off, there is no active code stored. There will be codes stored in the history, which will require a DRB II or equivalent to read.

Thanks but I brought to a few dealers and several garages and not one of them can get a code, they told me the cost would be from 200 to 3000.00 and they would start from the obvious such as egr, O2 sensor, and go from there.
UUUGGGGHHHHHHHH.

Tom -

I think your van does not have an EGR system. I know for sure my '98 doesn't, and I don't think they added it. I could be wrong, but if a mechanic starts telling you he is going to work on your EGR, you may want to verify that you actually have EGR. That's about all I can contribute.

Well I can tell you I looked at an after market and oem egr part and honestly I could nto find too much under my hood that matched close, In front to the passenger side is a part with like an air line and plunger that hooks up to maybe a water line? that is about as close as I can tell. I can tell you I am a much better painter than a mechanic HA HA. Im about to stick black electric tape over the light or a switch between my battery cable in the van so I can just clear the "NO" code engine light and be on my way

Hi guys,

Is there also a way to make a readout of the error buffer without having such a diagnostic tool?

For example in my 1991 Firebird I have to short circuit two pins on the OBD connector and then set the keylock in run position and notice the blinks of the 'check engine soon' light to get al the errorcodes which are in the ECM.
Disconnecting the battery for at least 15 minutes gives a total systemreset.

Thanks!
