I have a ninty six one ton van with the big block five. nine (sry all my number buttons are broke) and it kinda whines at low speeds, not from the rear end, but only when you give it gas, is this normal, just put an alternator on it, and looks like it needs a new tensioner (kinda jiggles back and forth a little at idle), but should it whine, is this a transmisson noise i should be worried about or is this normal, i am trying to sell it so i dont want anything to be wrong with her! Its hard to say for sure what noises are normal and which ones aren't. I suspect that the whine you hear may not be, but I don't know. I have never noticed any whine type noises from my '98 5.9.
How noticable is it? Like how loud?
Have you owned the van for a while and can say for sure that this is a new noise which previously did not exist? Or did you just recently buy it?
And just to clarify, the noise only happens while moveing at slow speeds - not at a stop? And only when on the gas?

The noise is fairly loud, but nothing that hurts your ears, just is anoying. Only happens when you hit the gas, and mostly only in first gear. Sounds like its coming from the engine, not the tranny (can't be for sure, fluid is at proper level) and deff. not the rear end.
The alternator seized up on this thing and was spinning the belt around making some horrible noises, put a new one on, do you think some sort of bearing is wrong with it now up front?

So was the noise there before the alt seized?
One thing you could try, just briefly as a test, is to pull the serpentine belt off and run it for a minute or two, and see if the noise is still there or not. That would rule out (or in) the fan, water pump, alt, and power steering. Doing this, thought, will likely throw a code or two (light up the check engine light) since the alt will not be putting out any current.

Yeah, i willl do it, it just really sucks cause i just sold it on ebay... now i am like what is this little whine i hear now, and havn't told him about, might have to cut a few hundred bucks off the price :mad:

Think it could be the water pump, is sucking up antifreeze 2, this sucks cause a guy is coming to pick it up this morning! :mad:
