Does the (idiot) engine service light automatically come on around a certain mileage ?

Nope....141,000 miles and no light ever comes on my '94. But I have OBD-I.
Get it scanned and see what it means. Could be a light for exessive rust bubbles. ;)

Mines actually on most of the time, with over 140,000 miles, but I haven't looked into it. I also haven't driven the van all winter so, when it warms up a little, I'm going to start going over it, to make sure it's purring nicely for this summers vannin' season.
