I was driving on the highway when the check engine light came on, 20 sec's later no power like the tranny was slipping or gone. Had it towed home pulled some codes. This is what I got
I thought I would start out with something simple like changing the speed sensor. When i pulled out the sensor i was covered in metal shavings. Didnt like all the much but threw the new sensor in and gave it a shot. I have drive for about 5 seconds and no reverse. Cleared all the codes and tranny is still jacked up. Is this transmission gone? What does it sound like? 59,000 miles on this van. What the heck. Any advise would be greatly appreciated

Been thinking about it all day and night. I come to the conclusion that the speed sensor was throwing a error code because it was covered in all those metal shavings. I pulled out the new one and tested the power resistance against the old one and they were both the same. So basically the car gave me a 2 minute warning that the tranny was about to go. GREAT!! It blows my mind that this tranny only lasted this long. I dont know what other maintanance I could have done other than doing a power flush everytime I changed the engine oil I guess. Dont know if that would have helped. I had the fluid power flushed at 30k and was just about to do it again at 60k. Did alot of research and it seems the tranny's are weak.50-80k is about all you can get out of them, from about 90% of everyone who has posted about tranny problems. Bummer for me maybe I'll do a write up on a tranny replacement. To help out the next poor sucker who buys one of these vans.UGHHH!! When I get this thing open I'll post up some internal pictures

Only 50 -80K is an untrue statement . since 2001 they have been as reliable or more reliable than other makers trannies . Is that to say there won't be 1 or 2 lemons out there ,certainly but you will have the same thing happen even with Hondas and Toyotas . I myself would not go the 60K interval they reccomend for severe service on these 4 speeds though do to their checkered past . I assume you had the 3/36000 warranty and not the 7/70000 warranty that they came out with . I'll be the first to admit though Chrysler needs to up their warranties to match GM and Asians to 100K for powertrain .

I have read this too. I'd imagine its due to the weight of the vehicle. The 3.8 has plenty of power on tap. This would have been my secound oil change comming up if this didnt happen at 60k. I was being cautiouse From reading past experiences with this vehicle from other owners. This is actually the 1st thing that has gone wrong with this van. So I'm happy with it other than this. I would be on the more cautiouse side when getting over 50k.I'd be impressed to hear any Caravans with over 100k on the original tranny's.Anybody?

my had the origional 3-speed up until 195,000 Kms
ended up busting some sort of a planetary gear in the rear of the tranny
had it rebuild with new internals and they used the same differential because of no damage to it
still going strong since now at 285,000

but it does sound like your tranny is toast
metal shavings in the speed sensor is a very bad sign
if the speed sensor was your only trouble your 4-speed tranny would switch to 2nd gear and stay there, and still work in reverse with no slippage

Were all Chrysler vehicles from 2002 and above covered to a 7year/70k mile power train warranty?

They don't seem to know what they want to do , 2003 and 2004 were 7/70000 and they went back to 3/36000 for 2005 and above . they need to match gm at 100000 miles .

Found this nice info for me maybe this will help anybody else out to i got it from The Auto Channel
Basically this sumes it up:
Auburn Hills, Michigan, USA, July 2002
DaimlerChrysler Corporation today announced it will provide an industry-leading seven year/70,000-mile limited powertrain warranty on its Chrysler, Jeep ® and Dodge brand vehicles in the U.S.The warranty, which is fully transferable to subsequent owners at no extra cost, will be provided free of charge on all new Chrysler Group vehicles purchased or leased on or after July 9, 2002. Components covered by the "7/70 Powertrain Warranty" include engines, transmissions/transaxles, transfer cases and axles.Powertrain component coverage becomes effective following the standard bumper-to-bumper coverage of three years or 36,000 miles on all other components, and extends to seven years or 70,000 miles, whichever comes first.[/

Bought my 2002 GC in June 02 and it came with 7 year 100K from Chrysler. Go and verify your warranty

Sorry to ask the obvious but, where did you have the tranny "power flushed"? and did they put in the right fluid (ATF+4)?

The fluid was changed at the dealer at 30k miles, for some reason. Some recall item, and the fluid was drained. I bought the van at 34k.
I called Chrysler this morning, they told me since I wasnt the original owner. (I bought the car at 34k miles)If I was the original owner it would have been covered to 7 year 100k power train. A little upsetting, since their is so much talk and commercials about their nice warraties. I guess if you can live with the depreciated loss of a new vehicle. that basically covers that extra warranty they offer for the a original buyer. Oh well I tried. I will post up my findings on what went wrong in a few days. :VHOT:

Vehicles manufactured after 10/2003 - second owners have to fill out a warranty transfer form at the dealership and pay a $150 fee to have the 7/70 warranty transferred. Read up on it in your manual that came with the van. Dealerships have web based applications to instantly verify warranty status and coverage by using your vin# and the part#. Don't give up to quick, as it seems that the first answer is always no.
