Check engine light 97 Grand

Recently I went to start my 97 Grand Caravan and the battery was dead. It was the original battery, so I jump started the van and drove to the nearest Auto store. I purchased the best battery they sold and they installed it for me. Well now the Check Engine Light is on all the time does anyone know what I can do to turn it off? Please keep in mind I know nothing about codes or what to do.

PS Please dont tell me I have to go to the dealer if so I guess the light will always be on. They charge me so much guess they think everyone who owns a Dodge is rich.

check the codes first

cycle the key on anf off 3 times ending in the on position and the service light will blink out the codes

1 flash, short pause, 2 flashes would indicate code 12

codes are seperated by a longer pause

1 flash, short pause, 2 flashes, long pause, 5 flashes, short pause, 5 flashes would indicate code 12 and 55

usually disconnecting the battery would clear the codes but since you did unhook the battery chances are there is a good reason why the light came on
