Ive got a 99 cummins with 80,000 miles on it. I was on my way home from Jersey the other day and my cruise control suddenly failed. When I went to start it after filling it with go go juice, I didnt hear that "Clunk" from underneath the hood when the heaters kick in right before start up.

I turned the key this morning, didnt hear the "clunk" but something is working cause after a few secs, the "Wait to start" light went off and it started fine. Note: it was 45 degrees out this morning.

Heres my questions...what exactly is not happening when I dont here that "Clunk" upon start up and would it have anything to do with my cruise failing. I know asking if the two problems are related seems silly, but they both failed in the same afternoon.

Thanks for your help.

soumds like a computer problem . do you have any other problems
p.s. the clunk is the intake heater coil pulling in to energize the air heater

Thank you for resonding to my questions. You dont know how it is to find a someone that knows what the "clunk" is.

To answer your question,...No, I have no other problems.

A little late but the clunk is the relays for the intake heaters kicking in. If you don't hear it they probably are not working. Doubt it is a computer problem but if it starts fine and no smoking I wouldn't worry about it for now. You could take a test light, have someone turn the key on when the engine is cold and see if there is power at the heater.

Im pretty much a retard when it comes to diesel engines. Where would I hook up a test light?

Where the intake is there should be 2 heavy wire going to it. Near the center of the valve cover left side of the engine. There is a rubber cap you can flip up and test for power there. Just make sure the engine is dead cold. You only have the time that the heater cycles to see if they work. That can be a short or no time in high ambiant temps.

I believe if the temps are above 40°F they may not cycle. I',m not totally sure on the newer ISB's what the temperature ranges are.

That test should see if they work. There has been 1 failure I know of of the heater element. This is a rare condition. If the truck starts fine it may be the Intake temperature sensor not functioning properly.

I have a feeling you are just at the ambient temperatures that the heaters aren't required, or just near it.

Double check all the vacuum lines to your cruise servo. Could also be a bad brake switch, but without the right test equipment would be hard for you to test.
You have checked the fuses, right??
The engine pre-heaters should cycle on at every start on a 24 valve engine at those temps from what I have noticed.
Hope this helps:)

Fuses? LOL I may have missed a fuse, but I saw no fuse that is linked to the cruise control.

There is a fuse that is Labeled "Engine" If I take the fuse out, turn the key, I hear the clunk. It doesnt start cause that fuse controls the fuel pump apparently.
