I was thinking long and hard on how to make my 96' Neon faster and stand out amoung the crowd of other neons. Serveral ideas come to mine....but one stood out more then others. Drop a SRT-4 engine in the front of the beast. I have did a little research on kits and create engine but have been unable to find any....here's where everyone of you come in. Has anyone seen or found any information on kits or engines? Any help or thoughts on this subject would be nice.
Thx,
Def_Jam

Don't waste ya time with an SRT-4 Engine....Just take a 2.0 DOHC motor and build it up like I did, you will get a lot more power that way and you will stand out

i agree on that the 2.0 L whith a turbo and a stand alone fuel management and some modification can give you closse to 300 Hp if you put 6000$

Just buy the SRT and sell the older neon. Less headaches in the end. I love my SRT. I thought about buying an older R/T and making it something more but figured it would be easier and less expensive to just buy the real thing.

Modern Performance and Howelle Automotive also sell Turbo Kits.

Also, this would be a matter of price versus preferance.

I would PREFER an SRT-4 but given that I don't have $28K(CDN) to lay out for one, a $5000(CDN) seems a much better bargain.

Besides, a turbo 1st gen coupe would kick serious butt!!

How does the transmission hold up under the power? My guess is that you need some upgrades there too.

I agree with norenlaw, just go buy the SRT-4, & debadge it, & do some other 'sleeper' mods if you want to. Going this route will give you a warranty too! Just my 2. 'bird

i wanted to put the srt-4 motor in mine but i think im just ganna turbo my motor for now untill it blows and then find an srt-4 motor and drop that in there.....but i really want to find a 95 dohc motor and turbo that motor....

Hey Dragondon, it wouldn't even come close to kickin an SRT-4's butt! I think that he should go drive one, then I bet he would put some of his other 'pleasures' aside for the SRT-4. 'bird

the SRT-4 is not S**T compared to my old Neon (which my new one will reach that same level) and it cost me about the same as an SRT-4 to do it but that was only becuase I was trying a bunch of differant things, a Person could easily build a 1st gen neon alot cheaper that will smoke the SRT-4 and be able to do it in a 2 door, not a 4 dr familey car

dodgeneon_chick

well why not build a 1st gen neon 4 door to make it faster then a srt-4 then you have about the same things really...and i want to see a 1st gen neon beat a srt-4???? but if its really could happen i want to know what you did cuz i want to do it to mine but with the 4 thing....

I don't know about all of your huffing, saying that the SRT-4 ain't s**t? Have you ever even had a ride in one? Come on now, get a grip, if you could get your motor up to the 220-225 to the wheels HP, or 1 wheel in your case, your trans couldn't hack it, + the SRT-4 has equal length CV' shafts, AND a warranty to boot, and for the same $$! I got a ride in a bone stock '4 and was impressed, to say the least, I am not easily impressed, having a 400+ HP 69 RR, and having ridden in 440 Darts, Challengers, & Cuda's (which would hand the SRT-4 it's butt.) Think about Dodges offered upgrades, one being a bigger Turbo-still warrantied! I agree that the 4 doors suck, the SRT-4 should have been a 2 door car-no doubt, but facts are facts my friend.

okay i got a something to ask anyone....out of the srt-4 and the 1st gen what one weigh is more???? cuz i just wanted to see if the srt-4 motor in the 1st gen would be faster or not....

Badredbird, you need to look at my post again I have nothing but respect for the SRT-4 BUT compared to the neon I used to have it couldn't pull it's weight. my OLD Neon R/T ran mid to low 12 second 1/4 miles (depending on weather and track conditions) and was every bit as reliable if not more reliable to drive on the street and didn't look like a granny car being a 4dr since mine was a 2dr. All I was saying is that you can build a 1st gen up to smoke an SRT-4. Oh and also so ya can't go saying I was using Nitrous I am COMPLETELY against ppl running nitrous and it the poor mans cheater IMO. BUT ONCE AGAIN I HAVE ALOT OF RESPECT FOR THE SRT-4

dodgeneon_chick a 1st gen Neon weighs less than an SRT-4

okay thanks tunner so maybe you can make one faster....i dont know i would rather make my car fast then buy it fast cuz then you got something to say to other people when they look at your car.......maybe its just me that feels that way i guess....im not saying that the srt-4's are not nice yeah it would nice to have one but i think its better to make your own car fast.......

there's something to say for paying the insurance of a 2.0 while being as fast as an SRT-4. Reliability would be my concern though. the transmission wouldn't put up with the power without mods, as well as the internal engine parts. Without lowering the compression, you can't go too far on mods on the stock engine. I'd rather find an SRT-4 crate engine and work from there.

mine was completley reliable I drove it to Fla and back no problems and drove it every day around town without any problems

So, back to DEF_JAM's origonal question...because I am also interested in dropping and SRT-4 engine in my 96.
Does any one know where I can find the specs I need, to see if the SRT will fit in my 96 engine bay, and what mods I will need to mount the engine and trans? I've looked into the turbo kits and other ways for more power, but it wouldn't be worth adding anything else to an engine with over 100,000 miles on it.
If I can find a crate engine and tranny and drop it in, it'll be one bad azz neon.

Tuner, I agree with blusxt, you would need some lower end work to an even mildly (50,000 mi) tired car, and some trans work to BEAT THE CRAP out of it anytime, all of the time, if you chose to, reliability is a given on the warantee'd SRT-4. And we're talkin about a stock SRT-4. Add the big snail & free flow exhaust, and you would have a whole new animal!
I can see 'chicks point too, wanting to build your own hot rod,but in this case, I, personally think that the SRT-4 is the way to go, but if I went that route, I would definatley build a 2 door. $ doors is the only thing that I see wrong with the SRT-4, Opp's, and that STUPID Ram Head front & center!

If it didn't have 4 doors, I wouldn't have gotten one. I have two kids, so two doors is a definant no/no.

I agree about the rams head, they should have left it out, or made it just a sticker so It could be taken off, instead of putting it into an indention.

My friends keep trying to talk me into buying a RSX instead of a SRT - 4. I think that they are just scared. My buddy runs 14.3 @ 99mph in his RSX

2002 Acura Rsx
Apexi exhaust
injen cold air intake
DC sports racing header
Hondata ECU
comptech springs
Enkei wheels/Toyo Proxies

It is a sweet car, but I like the SRT - 4 better!!
What does anyone else have to say??

how about this? find a 2.2 or 2.5 turbo (cheaper than newer stuff) some mild mods an sds stand alone and smoke the competition. just think a 2.5 can go high 13s in a minivan, just amagine in a neon that looks plain.
maybe even a stock turbo3 engine making 224 hp
