Out playing saturday I hit 6400rpm and it shut down hard almost felt like it was going to die.I thought the pcm shut down at around 6900 or 7000. Any ideas?

A stock Dohc rev limiter is at 7400 rpms and a stock Sohc rev limiter is set at 6400 rpms. There is no real reason that I know of to flog a sohc up to the 6400 rev limit. They make peak power at 6000 rpms. So shifting at 61-6200 rpms would be the best time to shift. I think that the stock Dohc makes it's peak power at 6500 rpms. Most people who drag race neons usually shift their dohc at 7000 or just above.
An aftermarket computer will raise the rev limiter. As in my case the Mopar PCM raised my rev limiter from 7400 to 7600 rpms. AF/X PCm's will raise it slightly more. And also have more advanced timeing. The main reason I changed PCM's was not to rev it to 7600 rpm's but instead I wanted to eliminate the 135 mph cut off. You see there are two restrictions here. We have both a rev limit and a speed limiter. Just in case you are wondering your stock MPH cut off should be around 118 mph. Some even shut down at 110. Early ACR's did not come with a MPH cut off, but when they made them available for the general public after 95 they put in the 135 mph cut off. The newer R/T with the sohc magnum motor will also cut off at 135 mph. The older R/T's are the same as other stock neons. 118 mph. Hope this helps you out! Later

Sounds like it might have! Take the car to a dealer and have them run a check on your Vin # and they can tell you what part # should be on the Dohc and Sohc PCM's.
Then see if the PCM is labeled with the Dohc or Sohc Part #'s.
The numbers on my Stock Dohc ACR PCM is P05269825 thats on the sticker on the PCM. I imagine yours is the same. Just tuned different. The P# for the correct Mopar Pcm for our cars is P5007038 and the Sohc MP PCM ends with 037. Sorry I don't have a 97 sohc P3 for the pcm. However Im almost 100% sure that your PCM P# should match mine stock if it's correct. Don't quote me on that tho.
Maybe someone with a Stock Sohc PCM and a Non ACR dohc can shed some more light onto this subject. Good Luck!

The sticker on 97 with the shut down at 64k is P/N 05269998A. On my 98 sport the sticker is P/N 05293064A. Both are 5 speed DOHC.

Swap them out if they have the same harness and see what happens.

You know 95Moparracer, I was thinking that but I have never seen where the Rev limiters were different. Speed limiters yes, but the rev limiter no. Guess we are well on our way to finding out.
If all else fails Scott, go to modern performance and order you a Mopar PCM for about 220 bucks. Then you wont hit a wall until 7600 and you will never reach a speed limiter. Good Luck!

yeah my 97 is just a highline with the DOHC 5 speed and I know can hit 7400
my car is identical to scottrachel even the wheelcovers, except for green paint and factory spoiler
Also, part # 05269998A is a '97 DOHC 5 speed PCM
05269991A would be the SOHC 5 speed pcm
5293064A is also a '98 DOHC PCM with a 'DD4' trans (DBB = manual, DGC = AUTO)
not sure what code DD4 means my guess is manual trans
scottrachel i can decode your vin for you if you send it to me

Hey guys I tried it again and at about 6k it sounds and feels like the motor is topped out I'll switch the pcm with the other one this weekend and see if it makes a difference. The rpm's jump quick from 2k to 5k then they seem to come alot slower.

I had a crazy weekend!! Switched the motor into a nicer body on sat. Exhaust manifold bolts were broke, had to drill and retap the head to put the header on. Check engine light was on, cam crank sensor, Timing belt was one off at the crank and the egr valve was sticking causeing crappy idle. We unhooked the egr vacuum hose and plugged it. (no engine light) Now it runs great well passed the 6400 shut down!!! I'm amazed on how quick this car is now!!! Will post pics later.
