As my work to defunk my truck continues, I've started tinkering with the interior. I have these hideous 6x9 speakers hacked into the door panels on my D100. What is the stock speaker size, and where are they mounted? I used to be able to find this info on Crutchfield's website, but I can't find the old diagrams anymore.

Those are in the stock location, but the stock speakers are about 4-5".

Thanks for the information. That is exactly what I needed to know.

The speakers were on the inside of the door, in That location. The size should be a 6x9. That's what was stock in my 88 and 89. I mounted mine the same way yours are now. If you want good sound, then that is the best way. All I have is 2 @ 6x9 in the doors, the stock dash speaker, and 2 @ 1.5" tweeters on the door pillars. It sounds awesome, and not muffled like the stock location Behind the door panel. It's just a matter of preferrence, though! Oh yeah, 2@ 10" subs behind the seat. Boom Boom!

Just paint the grills to match... otherwise, yeah it sticks out.

i have a 74. when i got my truck i guess the orig. holes were just big enough to fit 61/2" pioneers in the doors. thats what i got rollin in mine. on top of that i got two JL 10w3 subs n a 1200 watt kenwood amp.

Your 6x9" speakers dont look so Bad...
And if 6.5" was the original size.. You Know the sheet metal behind the door panel is "cut" also...
Maybe to "dress" it up you could cut a piece of 1/8th inch MDF to fit the "recess" of the door panel & paint it to match.. Them remount the 6x9's
I on the other hand have about the same setup... 6x9's in each door.. 2-8" woofers & 2-6.5" mounted behind the seats.
It's a very.. (Budget-Friendly) setup... But it works for me... Besides I rather listen to the engine anyways... :D Heres some pics..

Speaker's in the door? My 72 only has one speaker in the dash. I would love to have a couple more speakers!

Our 72 only has a 6x9 in the dash from the factory. My dad then cut two holes in the lower metal part and put 4x6's in there. He wishes he wouldn't have though, since he cut up the dash. But as of right now it's without a radio, although I had hooked up a Pioneer cd player into it, but it was raided for my sisters car.
Truck doesn't get driven much if ever in the winter so it's not a big concern right now.

I have the same set up, and you do have to cut the panel and the door metal. Here is a pic of the stock speaker, and original door. Just happen to have my sister's Ramcharger apart.

Because of the recent (finally) cold snap, I haven't attempted to pull a door panel off to check the damage. My only hope is that by surface mounting the speaker, the guy who installed the speakers didn't hack the metal, and that the speaker magnet is sticking through the existing hole underneath the door panel.
I'm all for good sound, but I also like a clean, stock appearance, especially with speaker installations. This is also a yard truck, so I'm happy as long as I can hear the music.
