Went to warm up my truck this afternoon and it started fine ran it for about 5 mins. shut it off. Went to restart it a couple mins later and nothing, and I mean nothing no lights, horn, radio starter etc. Dead ............. So I wacked the starter relay, jiggled a few wires reach up behind the dash jiggled some more wires. Still nothing. So slammed the door went inside to cool down and went out 20 mins later and it starts right up runs fine. Shut it off starts right up again like nothing happened. Anybody have any idea as to what would cause this? It's a 76 D100

Mmmmm.... Ignition switch? Maybe dirty battery cable connections? Or rotten (Inside of the cable) cables.. Dirty bulkhead connections?
I hate intermittent stuff.....

make sure the wire that runs to the starter is on tight and that the connection is clean

I had similar behavior during an incident one Sunday morning recently as I was getting all set to plow the drive (weren't I some pissed, too). In my case I had just installed a new battery (routine maintenance--old won was performing fine but in its 7th year) and starter (old one went south), cleaning and tightening all the electrical connections in that circuit. Turns out I had been a little heavy handed with the dielectric grease and hadn't tightened down the negative battery cable clamp enough. Took me an hour to figure that out, of course. So first thing to do, like it was suggested above, is start poking around the battery and make sure those connections are clean and tight. If you're lucky, you've nailed the problem--if not, you've eliminated one possibility and just need to methodically eliminate each other one until you resolve it (I know, easier said than done).

Me too, I will check the cables/posts as I just greased them after I replaced the alternator and VR. Bulkhead connections are a little crusty I did wiggle those around though. What would a failing ignition module do?
Thanks Gents,

Ignition module would keep it from starting and running only, lights and everything else should work. :gr_patrio

Sounds like the main power wire connection through the bulkhead is dirty or burned up. I'd pull them all off, clean and grease them, and see how it does. I had to run a seperate wire bypassing the bulkhead connector in my 73 Club Cab.
