Do not replace the old destroyed harnesses with a new original equipment harness... you would be wasting your time. I strongly would suggest to replace it with a painless wiring universal truck wiring harness and rewire the truck.. It will be more cost efficient, and eliminate all the problems that these trucks have.

Well, here's where I disagree. The original harness/s lasted 30 years and you can install a replacement OEM harness in under an hour. Also the factory service manual for their vehicle references the factory wiring. You can no longer use the factory manual for diagnostics if you change to the painless wiring. It's a matter of maintaining your electrical system just like you change your oil. The painless harness will fail eventually just like the original if it is not maintained.
I kinda look at this like changing spark plugs. Your local parts counter nerd tells you to install super nuclear gold tungsten iridium kryptonite plugs at the cost of $10 apiece. The customer buys these and installs them and swears that it has never run better and those plugs are the best thing since sliced cheese! What the customer fails to tell you is that he never does any maintenance to his truck and the old plugs he just changed out have 200k on them! Once again his engine and new plugs will not be maintained and will wind up in the same condition.
I have no problem with using the painless or other wiring systems out there, it's just that they are not a cure all.

Interesting discussion.

Who sells quality OEM-type harnesses online? Or where can you get new ones?

Yes, I do agree with you that the factory harness works fine... But, how hard it is to find a new harness and the cost of them puts you right where you would be replacing it with a modern painless fuse block. I went the way of replacing all mine with OEM harnesses... at a cost of almost 320 bucks, but then i've spent a lot of extra money bypassing the ammeter, etc. It would have been easier and cheaper for me to have just replaced everything with the painless kit originally.

I checked out this painless wiring site. I guess im doing something wrong, because there is no 1979 dodge listings.

painless offers a kit that is for a universal 12-volt pickup truck.

they also offer a universal kit for a mopar muscle car.

I would call and talk to painless and find out the differences between the two, and see which one would work better for your situation. You are gonna have to be fairly prepared and ready to do some work to replace this, but it will be worth it in the end.
