I am new to this site. I have a 79 D100. It has a 318 bored 40 over, heads have been ported and polished and has new valves and springs, it has a comp cam, headers, edlebrock performer intake and 600 carb. It has a 727 Torque Flight with a B&M shift kit. It still has a stock rear end.

Well thats it for the intro. I will start looking around in the threads. If anybody has any info about a ford 9" rear end swap, please share.

Pictures of my truck are in the gallery. I will add more later. Also I can't figure out how to post pics in this thread :dunno: But I have a lot of pictures and some good videos I will post in the future.

The only reason I am considering the ford 9" is because I have one available for cheap. I won't swap if I have to do much modification.

Welcome to DT: I picked up a 72 Power Wagon in early September to go along with my 04 Ram 2500. These older dodge's are too much fun.

Thanks for the compliments. I love the power wagons I am seeing on this site. The first vehicle I ever paid for when I was a teenager was a 79 power wagon for $1500. I wished I had that truck back.

I really don't know much about rear ends. I have been "told" that the ford 9in is the strongest out there. Of course I know where I am posting at right now, so I expect a difference in opinion. I was just considering it because I can get one for cheap. However, today I scored big time on a good salvage yard. This guy is totally mopar. He even has a Little Red Express, but its off limits to us customers. He is really good with his prices. He is prior Air Force so I got a little something in common with him, so maybe I can get some hook ups. I am probably a good year away from messing with the rear end. I just got through doing all the headwork and stuff, so the truck funds are low right now.

I would use a 8-3/4" Dodge rear end or a Dana 60 if heavy towing or racing is the intended use.
When I did a rearend swap on my '78 van the list of axles was the following by feasabilty.
#1 8-3/4" Dodge ...Brakes and driveshaft no mods.
#2 9-1/4" Dodge... Driveshaft?
#3 9" Ford.... Brakes, Driveshaft, Shock an Spring mounts all had to be changed.
#4 Dana 60 with 5 on 4-1/2".... Driveshaft and cost as well as availibilty all are problems.
The Dodge 8-3/4" is plenty strong if you use a 489 or 742 gear carrier, not the 741. (489 is the strongest)

its called money why sell my 9 inch and then go buy a dodge rear if i could just swap an extra rearend ive got underneath it.What is the bolt pattern on these dodges?Yea 9 inch has always been considered the best rearend out there i dont know much about the other rears but ive always been told the 9 inch has been able to withstand tons of torque while sometimes the others failed i mean its good enough to be used in nascar so yea id consider it the best

Some reasons Nascar uses the 9" Ford.
#1 It has a removable carrier for quick gear ratio change... The Dodge 8-3/4' does also, but the axle bearings have to be adjusted. These can be changed to Moser or Green bearings and eliminate the need for adjustment.
#2 Ford 9" has more ratios available... So who cares?
#3 Ford 9" is said to be stronger because more than one ring &pinion tooth are in contact at a time... This is because of the hypoid offset with causes more friction.
#4 Ford 9" has 31 spline axles and can be up graded to 35 or 40....Dodge has 30 and can be upgraded to 35, maybe 40.
#5 Ford 9" has larger bearings.... Dodge 489 series uses the daytona size bearing.

Hey spag I'm sure we can find you a 8 3/4 rear for the truck. If you put a ford part on that thing I will be taking the truck back:)

Yeeeeoow! He sounds like he means it! :D

I've gotta confess... I put a Furd part in my Powerwagon once....
I blew a fuse and didn't have a spare in the glovebox. I had to go into the glovebox of a Bronco, where I found the right fuse...

I still have nightmares and wake up in a cold sweat about that sometimes.. ;)

:eshooter: I won't put ford parts in it only because I am afraid the truck would go down hill if it were taken from me.

When I get off of work today I will show you what I found :cheerl:

Bherder, Its brave to talk about something like that, thank you though. It has really helped me understand what I could have went through, if I would have chose to use the ford part.

Well, I'm just trying so save others the suffering and shame I've had to deal with for so many years. My wife and kids wouldn't even speak to me for months...

LMAO you guys are cracking me up:thatfunny

The 9" is a good rear end, probably the best, if you asked some less biased people;) but the 8.75 Chrysler is only a hair behind it. IMO it's probably just as strong, and it's only slightly less easy to swap the hoghead out. But if you're not swapping gears every week, who cares? My truck has the original 240k+mile 8.75 in it, and it's never given me a problem yet.

Well I did find a good mopar salvage yard and I think I could get a good "mopar" rear end from there. But thats a little down the road. My truck funds are going south pretty quick.

Our 72 has the 8 3/4 with a 3.73 sure grip. No problems, ever. Just had to change the fluid a couple times after 175k miles.

Truck 8 3/4's might be easy to find (IDK) but the car ones are a little more scarce.

And really sharp truck. I looked for years for one similar to that but came up empty handed. Welcome to DT!

Thanks for the compliment. I actually saw this truck for a couple of years before I had the chance to buy it from Herksrus.
