New to this place and impressed with depth and scope of information available.
My electrical story: Driving along in the old 86 shortbed when it up and quit running. Always been a faithful dog and never a problem and 20 mpg on a regular basis (/6 with 4spd od trans). After an hour on the side of the road checking fuses and wiring inside and under the hood with a voltmeter, found no spark to the coil. Did the hotwire thing from battery to coil and it fired right up and ran better than it has in the last several years! Hmmm, what the ? Only non stock item in this vehicle is a stereo unit in the dash. Checked the fuse box again and all is well, so, time to pull the music box, a small adventure in itself, and no obvious problem. Pull out the Haynes manual (fairly bogus material) and start working through the electrical schematics. Naturally, no schematic for my year vehicle? Ok, must be the brain box? After another hour or so hunting under the hood, can't find the thing! Time do do the computer search deal. The gods were smiling when I found this site. Read through the first 5 pages or so and decided to join. Have read all 30 pages and finally figured out where everything is located and got quite the education on the Lean Burn dilemma. Won't even go into all the crazy things going on during the testing phases before I decided to put in a new ignition system. Checked out the parts places suggested by various members and looked on ebay for a kit. Found lots of them for $140 or so and decided to check my local sources in town. Went out this morning and picked up a new/rebuilt distributor that had been on the shelf for 25 years. The parts guy said he'll never stock another one, so, no core charge and gave it to me for $40! A GM HEI unit was $20 and another $10 at Radio Shack for assorted connectors and wiring stuff. Tomorrow morning is looking good for the installation and looking forward to getting the Desert Tortise (nickname for the 80 hp engine) back on the road. Thanks to all for the goldmine of info!
Would appreciate someone posting a complete wiring diagram for a '86 D100...
