Looking at buying this car. A 96, with a V6 and 130,000 miles, all the power options. The owner says it slips when cold pretty bad, but when it warms up it shifts pretty good. Now, I would bet money that SOMEONE out there has had this problem and knows what to do about it.
Can it be repaired without too much cost?
What about a salvage yard tranny?
Are reman trannies alot for this car?

The guy only wants $600.00 for this car, it runs great and looks really good inside and out.

bad news, the tranny's shot. you can just about bet on it. but the good news is that the car has been somewhat babied or maintained. if not, it would typically go out around 85,000 miles. it will cost probably 1,500 - 2,000 if you have someone else do it, or so i have heard. trannys are easy to come by, though. a lot of these cars ended up in the hands of young folk who have wrecked them.
now for the real question - is it worth it anyway? hell, yeah, it is! four of my eight vehicles are Avengers, three of which are daily drivers. check the specs - handling, braking, 5-star crash rating, etc... nothing like them in my book. basically, if you don't get it, let me know where it is, please.
if you do seriously want it, lemme know whereabouts you are and maybe i can hook you up with someone. for example, there is a guy in Fort Wayne, IN with several Sebrings and Avengers with between 12k & 48k miles.
btw- in my only high mileage Avenger, i cahnged the tranny fluid every 10k and she shifts great with 172,000 miles on her on the original tranny.

I am gonna go look at it closer this afternoon. I am interested in it, it's pretty darn nice. and for that price I can't hardly go wrong. I think he'd let it go for $500.00, he wants it out of his yard.
I will let you know what I do. Funny, you mention a guy in Indiana, and I'm going to Columbus Indiana end of next week.
Is this 2.5L a good engine? It doesn't self destruct and sludge up like a 2.7 does it?

no, htey are not related to the 2.7. that was froma poorly designed oil pickup tube which was later redesigned, as i understand. the 2.5 is a great motor for reliability. not a torquey motor, she definitley prefers to be over 3,000 rpm. run premium gas and strong plugs (i ran Bosch +4's when i ran a V6) and you will see a big difference. in my case, 27mpg on 87 octane, 32 with 93 (from Ohio to VA on route 77- windy mountains) and a heck of a lot more responsive. but it NEEDS a timing belt and water pump if it has not yet been replaced or if there is question to it. that isn't cheap, either, but you will lose the top end if either one goes. good luck
