Hey guys i was cleaning my 86 d150 yesterday after mudding and i got her clean and then came out and tried to start it about 1/2 hour later and it wouldn't start. i did spray the underside of the truck to get all the mud off and so i think it got in the engine bay. I took the distributor apart and cleaned and dried it and then i took out the spark plugs and blowed out the cylinders which did have water in them but we got thall the water out and the cylinders ready to go. After doing all of this my truck wouldn't start still. i took a spark tester and i was gettin spark from the ingnition coil to the distributor but im not getting any spark out of my distributor. i was wondering if there is anything you would replace other than distributor cap and rotor, spark plug wires , and ignition coil. i am going tomorrow to get all of the parts and hopefully get her running again. any other suggestions welcome if there constructive. thanks ted.

Pop the cap off and verify if the rotor turns as you crank the engine over. If it doesn't, then you probably have a busted timing chain.

ok i have some up dates. i took the distributor cap off and the rotor is spinning. i bought a new ignition coil, new distributor cap and rotor, new plugs, and new spark plug wires and it still did not start. and again i am getting spark out of the ignition coil but im not getting any spark out once it goes into the distributor. could it be that i knocked some wire loose when pressure washing the underside of my truck or does anybody have any other ideas. i looked in the distributor and nothing was wet. please help .thanks

If you've got spark from the coil unless your cap or rotor are trashed you should get spark out of the cap. Unless you've got weak spark. Check your ballast resistor.

Just another thing to check... When you replaced the cap make 100% sure it's seated on the distributor all the way with the notch in the right place... It's a pain getting back there and getting the clips snapped back on, and I've had happen to me, where I didn't have the cap flush and flat on the dist...
It is puzzling though.. If you're getting spark from the coil, it's only a short route from there to the plugs... You didn't by chance get the dist turned out of whack did you?

i'll check that thanks. i just don't see what would have happened unless i knocked a wire loose somewhere underneath my truck when pressure washing cuz it was runnning rine all the way home and i shut it off to clean it and an hour later it doesn't start. and i don't think i got my distributor out of whack cuz i didn't touch that but i'll double check. thanks

The ballast resistors can go bad at any given time. Plus they are ceramic so extreme temp changes can cause them to crack.

Have you actually checked for spark at the plugs? Pull each wire off and check at the spark plug end. Have you tried a shot of starting fluid and/or could the engine be flooded? Plugs may be shorted out from being fuel soaked?
Do you have the spark control computer behind/near the battery? AKA:Lean Burn

Was it the one near the battery or one on the inner fender near the firewall?
