I have a 97 intrepid with the 3.5. The A/C compressor clutch has melted down twice. I have replaced the clutch once and the relay
also now it has melted again within 2 months. Anyone had this problem?:VHOT: :dunno:

yes i have the same problem my 99 burnt up in the middle of the summer 15days after my warranty went out grrrrrrrr :<. Did you do the work yourself? How much did you tighten that tensioner? Your previous owner or shop may have tightened it down like the owners manual said every ??? miles so if you got a new belt it will need to be loosened. If its to tight over time it may damage the clutch.

Ask your dealer to check the level of freon charge in the A/C system. If it is slightly overcharged with a little too much freon, the head pressure on the compressor will be higher than the system was designed for. This puts a heavier load on the clutch when it has to engage to start the compressor.

You have to use a shim kit when servicing the clutch on the AC compressors. There is a critical gap that must be measured and then adjusted with shim washers of varying thicknesses. If the gap is too large, the clutch could slip under the torque and burn up, although it may not be noticed since the compressor will still be turning.

Could be a faulty compressor as well....try replacing the whole unit.
