There is plenty of talk on the 4 speed autos, but I have a 98 3.0l caravan with 3 speed trans. I would like to change the fluid and filter in it, and I've seen people say to use mopar atf +3.

What I would like to know is Mopar atf +4 also ok to use in the 3 speed auto? My local Wal-Mart sells Mopar ATF +4. Will this be ok in the 3 speed? On the back of the bottle it says that the ATF +4 will work in all vehicles that call for ATF +3, but I thought I would get the opinions of the people on here.

Can I change the filter and fluid, and just leave the bands alone, or should I go ahead and adjust them?

Thanks for the help.

Yes you can use ATF +4 , thats all the dealer carries anymore , there was a TSB advising to use this even on older vehicles . It is probably better anyway as atf4 is mostly a synthetic fluid and will give better performance and protection . Unless you think it is not shifting the way it should I don't think you have to adjust them .

i would follow the vehicle manufacturers recommendations on the fluid

if the van is shifting okay, then do not adjust anything in my opinion

the 3 speed is a pretty bulletproof gearbox

the odd fluid/filter change and your van will be chugging along long after the 4 speed automatics have gone to the great scrapheap in the sky

How do you adjust the tranny bands, how hard are they to just replace? Engines, I can handle, Trannys, Never dug in too far.
