The tag in the drivers door jam will tell you what you can legally pull or put in it. Gross weght - net weight .

there is no pull power on the tag in the drivers door !
the original "trekhaak" has no label on it with the maximum amount of pull power !

If no one is able to answer your question, maybe you can find an owners manual for your van on ebay. When I bought my van, I bought both an owners manual and a factory service manual on ebay. Be patient, and you can usually get one for a decent price.

A 79 318, Im gonna guess between 5,000lbs and 6,000lbs depending on the rear end gear ratio u have.

I know I towed 4-5000lbs with my old 79, 318, what it was rated for, I dont know, u need to find the gross weight combination weight,(gwcw)? and subtract it from the weight of the van and all its contents/cargo ect, thats what u can tow. I think that is how its done, go over to RV.NET/forum and into the tow veh section, someone there might be able to help.
