Hello,
I have a 2000 neon and I'm getting the error code P601 - Internal Control Module Memory Check Sum Error. I'm not much of a mechanic, I mean I just registered on this forum cause I really want to figure out how to fix this thing. Could I get a a PCM from a junkyard and install it, or does that require special tools and whatnot? How much would a dealer charge for a new PCM and installation? I got pulled over today and got a ticket for expried inspection, but I can't pass inspection with this error code... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

Oh also, when I unplug my battery for a few minutes and then turn the car back on, the check engine light does not come on. But sure enough, the NEXT time I start the car, the light comes back on, same P0601 error code. I'm thinking that if I goto the inspection place, unplug my battery for a few minutes before they do the inspection maybe it will pass, as long as they dont turn the car off, then back on...

Ebay usually has a couple neon PCMs up for sale for between $30 and $50. Make sure it is for your application though, You'll need 2000-2003, and off of the same transmission (i.e. If your car is a manual, you need a manual PCM; if your car is an auto, you need an auto PCM). Good Luck.

I couldn't see why the car wouldn't pass with that code! It's not an emmisions code.
Ebay is the cheapest and HowellAutomotive or Modern Performance might have one for your car and it will still be cheaper than the dealer.Good luck

Now that i read that again... I'm wondering how you can drive the car.... The code you are describing is "internal PCM failure" is it not? If you are getting a code because of something other than the PCM, switching PCM's will not solve the problem.

Yeah, it's driving fine, not even a change in gas mileage. I have no idea what the code means, but everywhere I've read on the internet says that I need a new PCM. One website said to unplug the PCM and then plug it back in, but I don't even know where the PCM is. Could anyone help me out on that?

ok yea i have the same exact problem the car drives fine...i paid 400$ to have my pcm rebuilt and it did away with it for a week and it pops up again...idk wat would b causing it to trip it again...idk but im pretty hot that i dropped that much and it didnt fix it permanantly.a pcm from the dealship is 525 $. i called all the junkyards around here and down in dallas and none had a pcm for a manual 02 neon. it was a real pain in the ass. good lunk with urs tho.
