hello,
help, new problem!!!!!
speed indicator sticks, as from 20 miles it works, however.
once the speed decreases to 20 miles then it "falls" to 0.
no special noise, no sound, day meter does not count further when the needle stands on "zero" (when I drive of course)
what can there be wrong?

Sounds like either the speed sensor on the transmission is going wacky or the speedometer head itself is going bad.

how can I repair that?
is it complicated?

No not too hard. The speed sensor is an easy change...just unbolts from the transmission. I think it's the speedo itself that is going bad. Unfortunately I've never had the dash apart on a 98-03 van before, so I'm not sure how you would go about getting it apart.

What year is your van? I can look in the service manual and see what it takes to remove the gauge cluster.

1999.
I have the service manual of the 1998. is there much difference?

Should be identical. I just thought of something...it could very well be the speed sensor dropping the signal to the speedo below 20mph. The manual may give you some testing procedures for the sensor.

A few thoughts -

At some point from '98 to '03, they changed the odometer from an "LCD" type display to the blue fluorescent type. Not sure what year the change happened, and it probably won't effect your trouble shooting.

Looking thru my '98 manual, it looks like the vehicle speed is determined from the sensor in the center of the rear differential, which is also used for the ABS brake system. According to the manual, this signal goes to the ABS controler unit, then to the PCM, then to the instrument cluster.

I would think that if both the speedometer and odometer are acting dead below 20 MPH, but both work fine above 20 MPH, that you likely have a signal problem.

Keep us posted on what you find. :)

Pete

since this morning the ABS and BRAKE lamps are burning also.

Ahhhhhh. I'm not real familiar on the 98-03 vans. Thanks for the insight Pete!

I have been told that it might be a good idea to clean the electric contacts and/or the sensor. what 's up?

If the ABS and Brake lights are on AND you speedo is acting up, then I would certainly consider changing the speed sensor on the rear axle. It should be located on top of the differential.

Since the sensor probe is magnetic, it can pick up small bits of metal and this could mess the sensor up. You can give it a shot and see what happens.

this weekend, I have read the service manual and it seems no difficult work to me. I will order a new sensor. perhaps I clean the old one first, if it 's possible.
