what is the best way to remove the engine from a 1985 B250 ram van?

Out the front. Some people claim to have removed up and out the passenger door, but out the front is the way to do it.

Basically the whole front end (except fenders) can be unbolted.

Doing it out the side door you have to take out the tranny first. Out the front you can leave the tranny in.

I have never done mine thru the front, as it appears to be a lot of parts and bolts to keep track of. A few tips for V-8 only. (not for sixes) :D ; remove the heads and intake. (Strip the engine to a short-block) Raise the passenger side and support it on a jack stand, and remove the wheel. (Put the stand so it won't interfere with the engine hoist) Slide the hoist (Cherry Picker) , attach with chain and remove.
It may be necessary to use a small jack to raise the control arm up to allow the Hoist into position.
I installed my new engines as short-blocks, the trick is to chain the engine so the front end stays down so it will clear the dashboard. :rck:

I took my motor out one time and had it back in in less than six hours with two guys plus me. The front end comes off in less time then it would take you to pull the heads and intake off.

Well it's only suggestion, your going to have to take the heads of sooner or later if your doing an overhaul, but if your putting a replacement engine it may be wiser to take it out from the front. Also if overhaul is the name of the game, you can get your heads to the machine shop to see if they are rebuildable ahead of time, and decide whether it's more economical to rebuild or replace the engine.
