I have a 1992 250 conversion van, and it has a terrible growl on the road at all speeds. I think I have determined that the bearing on the shaft at the end of the tranny is bad. Can that bearing and seal be replaced by just dropping the drive line?, and if so, can anyone tell me where I can find a breakdown of the tranny on the internet??
1992 250 van
Automatic (do not know what model)
318 ( I think)
Any and all help appreciated very much

Howdy back at you. :)
Before blaming the transmission, have the rear axle checked. If you have the 9.25" rear, they (unfortunately) were known to develop pinion bearing problems. It may also be the axle bearings.
BTW, to replace the tailshaft bearing in the transmission, the transmission does have to come apart by removing the tailshaft assembly. Never done one and I don't want to.
If you have overdrive transmission, it is known as the A-518 or 46RH. If not, it could be the A-727 (42RH) or A-904 (36RH). There is equipment label stuck to the underside of the hood that will tell you this. What is the 8th digit of the VIN? Y=318 (5.2L) or Z=360 (5.9L)

Hey, thanks for the info Nate. But I am pretty sure it is the tail shaft bearing as there is a lot of movement there, and it is causing the drive line to really rumble and growl. I will remove the drive line, and check the other things you mentioned as well.

OK, took the van to the transmission guy and found out the rear end is shot :WHT:
Any ideas on where to get a GOOD used rear end for my van ?? :help:

How much would it be to have it repaired?
The only thing I can tell you is check around at some local boneyards. Mainly low mileage vans.

I am not sure what it would cost at a shop Nate, someone else on here probably knows. Maybe you can give me an idea of what i'm looking at? But whatever it is I can't afford it, soooooooooo have to replace it myself... :(
I wonder if anyone can tell me what the ring and pinion, axle bearings, pinion bearing, and the gaskets would cost...

You can check your local dealer or there's a place called Randy's Ring & Pinion (www.ring-pinion.com)
If you've never set a rear up before, I suggest you let a shop do it. I've done it once and I about ripped my hair out. It may be easier for you to get a used rear and replace the complete assembly.
